all white people get thier knickers in a knot when someone uses a derrogatory or racist term to describe a group of people. you wanna know why? because white people have a guilty conscience! |

try this Matt....it is quite informative. it touches more on issues of race and ethnicity, and less about multiculturalism, but it is simple and easy to understand. |

Yeh i hear where you are coming from. My mom holds the same views in which prevented me from learning anything about my asian heritage as a child. I'm a halfer. I think people who harbour disdain for other cultures, being present in Canada, need to take a long hard look at our history and the types of conditions people around the world live in.

Hm. Let me paste some definitions
Racist: a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race Nationalism: loyalty and devotion to a nation especially : a sense of national consciousness exalting one nation above all others and placing primary emphasis on promotion of its culture and interests as opposed to those of other nations or supranational groups It seems like your dad is veering towards the latter. He's just being extremely nationalist which to someone raised in our generation seems odd because it's not a large part of the psyche of our generation. I think perhaps what he means is that someone who is a citizen of this country, regardless of race or ethnicity should first and foremost consider themselves Canadian. He didn't go out and say WASP Canadians are far superior to Asian Canadians, etc. Not that I agree with him, I just don't think he was necessarily being racist with definitions taken into consideration. |

Well my 2 cents:
I would be echoing Myra's post and say he is leaning more to a Nationalistic paradigm. It can seem racist at times, because at your father's time of indoctrination racial mixing and mutliculturalism werelooked down upon in comparison to how things have been developing in the last 2 decades. My own thoughts, I used to be pretty outspoken when it came to multiculturalism because of the melting pot scenario as 35073R1C suggested, but in the end I realized that if people are experiencing a sincere love (read: not an adoration of image), then that's a good thing. Infact, we need more of it in our world because it's lacking. However I think that an affinity to one's own heritage (for someone of a distinct background) is also something worth striving for to a certain extent. In the end, I think humanity is best off respecting it's diversity, and maintaining it as well: in the name of reciprocity. |
