I think you should spend some time getting acquainted with the true classics, i'm talking joan crawford and bette davis here..(ooh and invite me over I love old movies)
-All About Eve -Stage Door -Mildred Pearce -All that Heaven Allows Look into movies with Bette or Joan in them...then try doing a Film Noir marathon. Another classic I love is Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Humphrey Bogart western. It's soo good. I also think you should fall in love with Al Paccino because he is amazing. Go watch every movie he's done! Start out with Heat. |

^I've got a half-decent tv, dvd and vhs.
Plus, I can cook a mean dish! Food _and_ movies, Miss? PS: Dig into the archives! Logan's Run (last heard, remake happening, now) Arsenic and Old Lace (bloody hilarious!) Salem's Lot (uber-creepy) Some good ol' Hitchcock (Trouble With Harry, The Birds, The Man Who Knew Too Much, Family Plot, etc...) Some surrealist cinema? (Luis Bunuel's "The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeousie", or, the Dali-collaborated "Un Chien Andalou", or "L'Age D'Or") Lots of good stuff out there! Make the effort to see something non-Hollywood! I'm still threatening to have a "Resume-Day" where I feed people and force them to watch movies I've worked on, all day/night! Frosty (very critical towards movies) |

|||
^hey! are you trying to steal my movie night with myra from me?!
and yeah, i'm down with digging into the archives. i've seen some of the dali surrealist stuff like 'unchien andalou'...isn't that the one with the eye and the ants and shit? pretty cool. |

If you like B-list gore, I suggest you delve more into Takashi Miike's films than just Battle Royale (although Ms Stabby definitely started you off on the right foot with that film. It's a perfect entry into a very dark and disturbing world.)
As for Mojo's suggestion of 'A Scanner Darkly,' make sure to also watch 'Waking Life." It pioneered the animation concept. As for me, I recommend these: After the Gold Rush Coffee and Cigarettes Broken Flowers Blue Velvet Elephant Man Waking Life I Heart Huckabees Ishtar Bringing Out the Dead The Fisher King Time Bandits The Adventures of Baron Munchenhausen Jabberwocky (a Terry Gilliam take on a Lewis Carrol poem) Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels Snatch Ichi the Killer Versus Brother No Direction Home: Bob Dylan Greendale The Bat The Abominable Dr. Phibes Dr Phibes Rises Again Dementia 13 The Last Temptation of Christ Jesus Christ: Superstar Rocky Horror Picture Show Eraserhead Dog Day Afternoon Serpico Dick Tracy Donnie Brasco Taxi Driver Mean Streets Rumble Fish (mostly just for an amazing cast) Sonny (only film Nicholas Cage ever directed but I quite enjoyed it) I'll go through my VHS collection and see what's around. Get on that Cirandiru! You'll most definitely love it. Rabbit Proof Fence is amazing; I learned so much about filming in open outdoor spaces from that film. Amelie... man Mojo... you have very similar taste in film to mine. Last edited by tiedye; Apr 18, 07 at 02:17 AM. |

Mr. Tiedye, you have some good taste in movies. The list I provided was basically a copy and paste of some of my favorite movies so I'll provide a bit more detail...
ACTION/GORE/HORROR STUFF If you like Takashi Miike's stuff, check out "The Three" and "The Three: Extremes" or "Azumi". Personally, "Audition" is one of my favs from Takashi Miike's. Russian horror "Night Watch" or Thai horror, "Shutter" CHEESY OVER THE TOP ACTION "Casshern", "Volcano High", "Ong Bak" or "The Returner." "Versus" is great as it has everything I love in movies: killing zombies, the yakuza - and combined them to form.... YAKUZA KILLING ZOMBIES! GANG/TRIAD/YAKUZA For those that enjoyed "The Departed", check out the original, "Infernal Affairs." Other great ones include: "Metade Fumaca (Half Smoked Cigarette)", "Jiang Hu", "Young and Dangerous", "City of God", "Layer Cake" ROMANCE STUFF THAT WILL NOT MAKE YOU VOMIT For those that enjoyed "The Lake House", check out the original, "Il Mare" - which stars the girl from "My Sassy Girl." Other mentionables: "Love Me If You Dare", "3-Iron" For those that enjoyed "2046", check out "In The Mood For Love" and "Days of Being Wild" which follow a bit of an informal trilogy. COMEDY "Men Suddenly in Black", "King of Comedy", "God of Cookery" - anything by Stephen Chow is pretty much over the top weird HK comedy. OTHER MENTIONS: "Sisili 2km" (Too weird to describe), "Chumbscrubber" (Think Donnie Darko meets American Beauty), "United States of Leland", "Brick" (my favorite movie, great film noire style), "Radio Flyer", "Raise The Red Lantern" Procrastinating work! |
