What Books Are You Reading?
On a whim, which I know was fueled by chlor tripolon abuse _ i bought this book called Armored Corps: Engage and Destroy by Pete Callahan, a $3.50 special from Zellers.
The genre is war stories off the back cover is it's about north Korea invading South Korea, and it reads like the same old, same old happening now in Afghanistan and Iraq. The author lists about 10 or so military officers in his Acknowledgements. However, this book was written with encouragement from Armo magazine. You'd have to know the acronyms to get into this book. And it does have a glossary of terms. What this book needs is a list of characters, since it has potential to become part of a future war RPG. Last edited by jenai; Feb 02, 08 at 07:37 AM. |

"A short history of Everything" by Bill Bryson
A short look at all thing science from the birth of the universe to now. Interesting read, the author is well known for some great travel books so this is a nice change. And "Catcher in the Rye" A classic which I missed reading growing up. Really enjoying it, but the style it's written in makes me look down on everyone ridding the bus with me. I read two books at a time, switching between them. Just a bad habbit I guess. Before that I finished Sidhartha, and Trouble with Triffids. |

*yawn* *snore* *fart* I hope all those theorists die!! ....Oh wait, they're all dead. GOOD! The Hungry Tide : Amitav Ghosh I just finished reading this novel, and I only did so because I had to for my world lit class. If you have patience for books that don't get exciting until 200 pages in, and focus on minute excruciating details that make you zone out, then go for it. He says some interesting things in his book, and makes some subtle commentaries about human nature (especially in the context of the increasing separation between rich and poor, urbanization versus country-side, and ecology versus industrialization and capitalism) throughout the text, but I think he goes off on too many tangents without making one clear impression on the reader. It seems that I'm not the only one to think his work sucks, but I guess to each their own. Some say it's good, I feel like I wasted my time. A Small Place - Jamaica Kincaid The author, an Antiguan native, talks about her experiences of growing up in Antigua and seeing how it has evolved from the colonial to post-colonial era. She criticizes the ignorance of the post-colonial tourist a LOT in her text, and I think, justifiably so. It's a short, passionate reading but you'll find that you'll get through it pretty quickly. At the end of it you might even find yourself being more critical about your role as a tourist and the ways in which you yourself assume the role of the colonizer in another culture. animal's people by indra sinha
it's the story of a boy who was horribly disfigured by this disaster: The Bhopal Disaster of 1984 was an industrial disaster that was caused by the accidental release of 40 tonnes of methyl isocyanate (MIC) from a Union Carbide India, Limited (UCIL, now known as Eveready Industries India, Limited) pesticide plant partly (50.9%) owned by Union Carbide located in the heart of the city of Bhopal, in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. The BBC gives the death toll as nearly 3,000 people dead initially and at least 15,000 from related illnesses since, while Greenpeace cites 20,000 total deaths as a conservative estimate. According to the Bhopal Medical Appeal, around 500,000 people were exposed to the leaking tables. Approximately 20,000, to this date, are believed to have died as a result; on average, roughly one person dies every day from the effects. Over 120,000 continue to suffer from the effects of the disaster, such as breathing difficulties, cancer, serious birth-defects, blindness, gynaecological complications and other related problems. |

I was at that point awhile ago lol. But still we can't forget that ideas do create change over time. No amount of apathy can ignore that.

But yeah, it all gets repetitive after a while. Glad that someone is appreciating the works though. |

You should pick up "The Intelligent Investor", "Money, Greed, and Risk: Why Financial Crises and Crashes Happen", and "Crash Proof: How to Profit From the Coming Economic Collapse" <-- google peter schiff, the author (also happens to be an economic advisor for the Ron Paul presidential campaign). |
