All That Dark Knight Hype
Y'know all that 'Dark Knight' / "Heath Leger's Oscar worthy performance" hype?
Just got back from the midnight showing of The Dark Knight; It kinda is that frickin' good, and Leger's performance as the Joker kinda does warrant an Oscar. In fact, The Dark Knight is already listed at #4 on imdb.com's top 250 movies of all time. |

We went to see it this morning. Great choice - barely any lineup, got centre seats, top row, no kiddies.
The movie was amazing. Definitely the best DC universe movie made although Batman Begins was pretty damn good too. Heath Ledger was great, but its hard to gauge his performance as being worthy of a posthumous oscar KNOWING that the man is dead - it changes your whole perspective. I will say that his portrayal of the Joker was everything I had hoped it would be and it remains a completely different incarnation than that of Nicholson's and therefore shouldn't be compared. *****SPOILERS***** I was sort of surprised to see that they cut his death scene. What's worse? Seeing that the Joker died in the film and eliminating him as a bad guy from the series or leaving him alive and having him portrayed by someone other than Ledger in a future installment? |

I think the 'hype' that the only reason that Heath Ledger and Oscar are being mentioned together is due to his untimely passing is unfortunately beating out the more deserving fact that the hype of his performance is actually pretty warranted.
DID THAT MAKE SENSE? hahaha |

I don't think Jack was even that angry...he had a lot of lighthearted moments too. Jack was great but he just can't be compared. The level of filmmaking and acting in this movie is just on another level. Ledger's character was just so psychotic and menacing.....the choices they made with this Joker really just made him a better character....I don't think it's a matter of acting (though Ledger stepped that up too). |

Yeah my comments on Ledger were definitely picky. He did do a great job, and did smash the angle he took on "the joker".
It's just that personally, I liked the instability of rage that Jack had. IE, where Ledger killed so nonchalantly, Jack would snap and bring out the fire. |

i think nicholson joker and ledger joker are way too different to compare
i mean nicholson joker was much more comic-booky. scarred by acid, a crime boss, had faceless thugs. he was motivated by a point and was deliberate, more like "lol sup im crazy look how i dress, im motivated by money and revenge, i have a crazy plan! try to stop me!" classic comic fare. that being said, it's pretty obv that nicholson stole almost every scene he was in. ledgers joker was played much more dark. he is literally insane (and at the same time more intelligent than nicholson's joker). he is more interested in chaos and the torment of his victims than actually acquiring wealth or power. he has no 'origin' and he chooses to wear makeup that exaggerates his appearance. the joker is seen more as the unfortunate result of the batman's war on crime. it's written as a much deeper, grim character and therefore heath had a lot more of leeway with where he could take it. all being said i think if i take off the nostalgia goggles, ledgers joker was written much better, and imo acted better, though i am a huge fan of the original. |

what's wrong with shawshank? it's a sick movie, relatively recent and reached a lot of people. im sure all 3 of those factors combined gave it a top spot.

i would be shocked and appalled if shawshank didnt make at least top 10, and imo top 5.
oh and im not suprised that dark night made top 10. i dont think its definitely eligible for it, though i can see why people think it so. like someone said already, its th best dc based movie as of yet, and so far movie of the year imo. fuck, and i thought ironman was good. its not often that DC can outdo marvel in hollywood, but looks like they are on top now. |

HARVEST.
but seriously, heath ledger killed it. i didnt even think the movie was all that good, just the joker. and anybody pick up the surveillance justification propaganda inserted so slyly into the subtext? call me crazy, but new movies seem to be doused with it (propaganda).. 7/10 Last edited by Bevvy Swift; Jul 28, 08 at 04:31 PM. |

Yeah, I don't think it's fair to compare Nicholson's Joker to Ledger's. I actually think Ledger's is far more disturbed and angry than the more lighthearted charismatic one you saw in Burton's Batman and the animated series.
I appreciate some Batman being released to the mass market that explores the darker Frank Miller-esque side of things. With that said, you can't really compare it to anything else. I agree that Bale's Batman was weak at times and he really needs to work on his Batman voice. The best Batman voice ever is that of Kevin Conroy who did his voice in the animated series and Justice League/Unlimited. Also, as I mentioned in another thread that amidst all of this Ledger and Bale hype, we're missing the stellar performance by Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent/Two Face..I really wish there was more time to see him go really crazy like the Two Face we all know and love. |
