What a great movie!!!
Johny Depp played the whole big-kid-looking-for-family/acceptance/love role great. He started off as such a prick to everyone, I loved it. I don't understand how a movie like this could be rated G though, it was extremely twisted. Quote:
And he was what, maybe 1 of 2 'coloured' people in the whole movie? The only other guy with some pigment in his skin was the shop owner where the ticket was found. (correct me if there's more) The oompa loompa songs and dances were awesome! All in all, superb movie. |

^it's not what race they looked like, i just thought kids would point out people on the street that looked like them and call them oompa-loompas. but i guess you can't get around that really. just like i pointed at big fat bearded men when i was a kid and called them santa.

Fair enough, I can see where you're coming from.
Could you peg a time frame or era when it was set? It bounced all over the place and had me wondering. Clothes were weird too, they had a modern Tokyo and New York but get back to London ( i assume) and the clothes changed again. That was one bad ass piece of orthodontic facial gear! |

^yeah, i kept thinking it was years ago, and then it looked like present day...but that's one of the things with burton films is that he doesn't really stick to the boundaries of time and kind of creates his own world and his own time.

i walked in with my regular tim burton expectations. hes my hero, and one of the reasons i make art. so my expectations were pretty high.
they open with a fucking preview for the corpse bride? HOLY SHIT. that right there was good enough for me, then the harry potter preview and i was happy to see the two previews i really wanted to see. honestly the movie could have been ok and i would have been happy. and then the movie came. once again tim burton instilled in me gazillions of creative bubbles. every moment every object every little detail is so carefully delivered and beautifully done so.... it reminded me of why i create and made my ambition of having an artistic future burn. charlies house? PERFECT. even down to the wrappers hanging on his wall, its all there. johnny depp i think gave an absolutely amazing performance. completely blew my mind. i wish i could perceive the world like tim burton does. im too overwhelmed to give a full meghan review. i loved it, i love tim burton. |

yikes. i went to the theatre to see it and thought it was horrible. the music made me turn purple with disgust in my seat. and although i love depp, i thought his michael jackson-ish portrayal of wonka failed to compare to wilder's version, which was still kinda psychotic but had CHARM! to further support the pedophilic MJ comment, what was up with wonka saying that charlie's family couldn't come and live with him at the factory? how is that staying true to the original novel?! overall, the acting totally lacked depth, emotion and continuity...lots of bright colours and sounds to wet the palette, yet a complete lack of substance to complete the package. what was up with the ending btw? there should've been an intro of background information on wonka's past b/c the ending just felt like it was tagged on and had no build-up throughout the movie at all! i feel like it was entirely unnecessary to show his childhood to begin with as it strips away the mystery that lies behind wonka's creepiness. the oompa loompas too were disappointing...they didn't leave me feeling any sense of excitement like they did in the original version.
my two cents! |

I loved it and saw it last week when it opened. I thought that Johnny Depp stayed true to the book more so than the movie. If anyone has read the book they would know that Wonka was quite the weird character. The Oompa's were ok, though I thought that the soungs were sometimes way more outlandish. I still adore the original though. All in all though, I thought it was awesome and just for future reference....
