agreed, genres start as descriptors, but they seem to inevitably associate certain types of music with certain sub-cultures, thus limiting the music's exposure. if we would stop trying to describe it and just enjoyed it there would be alot more scene crossovers than there are imo.
personally, i like "lazer bass" because it isnt bpm-referential, and can really encompass anything you want it to. we get hippies, cyber-hippies, hipsters, hip hop heads, rastas, ravers, and everything in between at our shows, and thats what its all about. |

it comes and goes. converging scenes and then diverging sounds... it happens with everything.
Take mashup for instance. Originally that started out as ruleless DJing. Yeah, the acapella blends were a big part of it, but a lot of where it got its appeal was the idea of throwing together a whole bunch of different styles and genres together in a mix. Take a look at it now and that scene has become inundated with electrohouse + lil Jon type vocals everywhere. I'll almost peg it at the No More Conversations/Get Low remix as the official death of the genre. Basically I'm saying mashup was a lot more fun when it was a dj style instead of a genre. But that's not to say that the descriptors don't serve their own purpose. Particularly when a style is in its embryonic stages (and most generally agree that this is the best time for the style) the words almost empower you to a "Hey, want to hear something new and different from what everybody else is playing? Check out this German Country Twang stuff." Funniest thing is I find that as they're going through these embryonic stages, the genre will seriously have like a billion different names until one is agreed upon by the general masses. And usually once that happens, the style has gotten cheesy, saccharine and developed into its formula. |

Hey! Jerks!
It took me WAY longer to cook dinner than it should have thanks to all of the kitchen wobbling brought on by this filth. And do you think I'm having any more luck eating it?? Are you trying to starve me? Cut it out! Last edited by Mr.Dave; Aug 21, 08 at 09:47 PM. |
