Nutron - Trance Set May 2004 :: Download
Here is a new set I recorded in may.
It is a trance set with harder elements and a hint of techno. It slowly progresses towards a Hard Trance sound. I used old and new tunes to give this mix the emotions I wanted to share. Hope you will enjoy, it is a bit different from what I normaly do :) Nutron - Trance Set May 2004 I would like to thank Globalsound for hosting this. So I took a listen (a little later than I initially intended, mind):
At Home: Decent enough. Tracks were good, mixing was fine. Not many of the tracks made me jump up and take notice but neither did they fall into muzak territory, as there was enough variety between them. At A Club/Rave: Too... Many... Breakdowns... Kills... Momentum. If the rhythm ends, it forces people to stand waiting for the rhythm to start up again. Too many breakdowns in such rapid succession leads to boredom, boredom leads to searching of other music, searching of other music leads to empty floors. Please! There are those out there who do enjoy dancing continuously for more than two songs, y'know. edit: stoopid grammer Last edited by Sykonee; Jul 07, 04 at 06:42 PM. |

I understand what you mean. Unfortunately, that is how Trance is music is conceived, and also what I lvoe about it. Not just a constant beat for 2 hours, but music that progresses and changes emotions throughout to keep you on your toes.
If I wanted to do a mix with a constant beat to get people dancing for a 2 hour thump, I would spin techno or house music (I do spin some techno). That being said, everyone has their opinions regarding this, and I respect yours :) |

A few breakdowns during a set isn't a bad thing at all. The problem is when there are too many of them in rapid succession. You've built up all this momentum from a great sounding breakdown and buildup, and the crowd is loving it. You mix into your next song, a smooth mix that utilizes a heavier percussion set which builds even more energy. There's momentum being built up as new elements and layers are introduced in this new song.
And then, everything dies, save either a voice sample or synth pad that sounds right out of an Eno track. And this repeats song after song. How does one keep any energy going with this? You can't. By its very nature, the breakdown is entended to loose the energy to focus on emotion instead. All well and good but this is at a dance club/rave. People go there to dance. Anyhow, don't take my brief review in a bad light. As I mentioned, sitting at home with it playing on speakers, it's just fine. Emotional music works great when sitting and relaxing. This is why I always approach a review of a set from two perspectives: at home and at a club/rave. All music is meant to be enjoyed in either one of these environments, just some less than others. The emotional, breakdown-filled trance music in your set works in the former locale, but not in the latter. |

Nice to see a different view on this. I went out 2 weeks ago to see Cosmic Gate live and I didn't really appreciate it because the mixes were super long to kick in, leaving alot of "alone kick without bass" time and most people would keep on dancing, but for me the energy would die off completely.
I like quicker mixes that blend into eachother and kick off fast so that you cant even differenciate 2 tunes at one point. For a more full on pumping mix, you might wanna check the website of the label im currently signed under at www.fevah.us in the artists tab. Banging Hard Trance/Hard House set which is usualy what I'm more into. This, as I mentioned in the first post, was a bit different for me (not that I wouldnt throw some down, still loving this stuff), it's nice to have a different perspective from mine on it, thanks :) |

Ah, this mix (at your site) is much better. Breakdowns are still frequent but they don't linger as much and even keep the momentum going at times with punchy riffs instead of drawn out pads. Even the ones that do linger a bit at least have some great payoff at the end of the buildups.
