^Im pretty sure its purely based on diet and or genes. My nails go in phases of either being really hard and grow quickly or being really soft and brittle. I forgot what I narrowed it down to before, but it could be milk & dairy. Not vitamin D though because my nails were at their worst in the summer with the all the sun.

i swear by gel nails.
and by pure nail bar. yes they are more expensive then your average 'steve nail' which is more like 'steve nail sweatshop' however i'd rather spend the extra $10-$15 per fill as my nails always look amazing. im so choked i have to get them taken off for the few months after my shoulder surgery :( no fancy nails for me! just hot opi colors done by miss nevada! |

Diet and overall health has everything to do with your nails, and nail growth. I get small vertical ridges which means I'm probably developing arthritis, which is entirely possible. I file and sand my nails with 600 grit sandpaper every second day, so you actually can't tell. From my experience though, Vitamin D does a lot for your nails. I've been taking it daily (I forget a day here and there), since July. I haven't had a nail chip or break since. I'm not sure why I got negative karma for my last post. I actually know a lot about nails (especially for a male). Also, see this link for nail patterns & health: Fingernails and nutrition |

The reasons your nails are destroyed after takin them off (for those girls that are worried about it) is because your nail is ground down before the acrylic is put on. I get my nails done by Sara in Ecclips salon in New West. Shes won numerous amounts of awards for her nails, and IMHO has the nicest sets of Acrylics I have ever seen.
Right now mine are black tips with purple sparkles swept down towards the cuticle. Looks amazing. Theyre average price, but the acrylic doesnt turn yellow (non yellow acrylic isnt a concept for most nail techs). I have had mine for 3 years now, and every once and a while I take off the whole set to have a fresh one put on, my nails are fine. Sara doesnt use a grind drill to file the nail, she does it all by hand with files, because of this the nail isnt being ground down to nothing before acrylic is laid overtop as a result your nails are still nice if they were to be removed. Id suggest going to her if youre going to get nails done. |

imo i think acrylic not only look terrible but break much easier then gel. plus its hurts like a bitch when they do break.
my gel nails are very short and you probably wouldn't know they are fake. the main reason i dont just have natural nails is working behind a bar your hands are contantly wet and around citrus and getting broken. i dont have to worry about my hands looking like ass after a few shifts of work. if i had a job that was much nicer on my hands i'd just treat myself to manis every few weeks. |

^ Agreed. I can't stand acrylics. Working at tanning salons in the past I have seen SO many women with yellowed acrylics. GROSS. UV Gel all the way!
That said, I don't get mine done anymore. Doing everything I do at work I'd just trash them in a few days :P |

Nev, you want to know what works great for hair growth and nails.....Prenatal Vitamins :) I have always had weak nails, but since being pregnant and on the Vitamins, they are strong and my hair grows so fast!! A few of my freinds have started to take them and have had the same results i have.

The nail tech my friend Rachel (who always has meticulous nails at all times) referred me to did an awesome job. I thought it was pricey, but i'll consider keeping them longer than three weeks if they look this good every day. |

Some of my work colleagues have these crazy ass fake nails and I just don't get it. We need to use the computer a lot, and I just don't see how they deal with fake nails on the keyboard. To me, it's akin to typing with oven mitts on.
I can't even stand it when my real nails are like a millimetre long when trying to type quickly. |

It just takes time getting used to. I have nails that could claw someones eyes out (they're super long) and I type just fine, with no problems once so ever. Its personal preference. I prefer long nails because I have super small hands so it kind of balances them out a bit. I look like I have carny hands with short nails. It's scary. I go and see this girl Sara in New West (I believe I have mentioned her earlier in this thread, and 3 girls on this site can vouch for how amazing she is). I now live in Kits and would rather take the commute a few times a month then find another nail tech closer to home that I am not completely happy with. |

Myra and Ashlee, I really enjoyed my experience with Angela. She's in Royal Centre (Burrard and Georgia). Will send you guys her number. She charges $78 (taxes included) for a full set of sculptured gels. Only takes cash.
Whatever you guys do, don't go to Fingertips to get your nails done. |

I went in and told her I wanted christmas nails and I now have silver and navy blue nails with sparkels and snow flakes. They look amazing. I love Sara. |
