and I think your rant is a little off. A lot of people aren't going to this because they're dying to have someone tell them how to live their life, they are INSPIRED by these people and drawn to them. Have you ever seen Quincy Jones interview? The man is fascinating and I would love to see him live. He's been part of SO many significant things in music in the last while and I'd love a chance to meet him. Hearing him talk about creativity (the topic of the speech) would be a great experience. It's too bad I didn't get the chance to hear a lot of the long gone artists I respect a lot speak, don't you agree? |

She's risen above that. But it is what made her a household name. Her break was made because of a decent picture and being cheaper then people who were more successful. Simplifying the situation I know. As for Quincy Jones, I agree with you. It would be great to hear him talk. Martha Stewart? Andre Aggesi? Not so much. This was billed as a way to learn how to succeed in life and business (our station did part of their advertising). |

Martha Stewart did not start off as a K mart spokesperson.
She was a teen model. She was a stockbroker. She is educated! I know a lot of people want to remember her because she did a brief stint in jail, but she worked pretty hard to get where she got in life and a lot of people have no idea. Martha Stewart - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia read up on it ;) |

Motivational speakers, "life coaches", self-help books, just about anything on Oprah.... these are all like religions. If you choose to follow them and it makes you happy, cool, but on the most part it's a bunch of self-deception and if you can see through the buy-my-book bullshit you can't really take what they say without a pound or two of salt, and that's usually where their methods begin to crumble.
I would say Tony Robbins is the devil, but he got just as badly shafted by the publication companies as the thousands of people that bought his books. |

I went to go see the Dali Lama speak for some stupid amount of money and still think it was worth it. I'm not really interested in any of these people but others obviously are. if someone else comes to town for a "motivational speech" or whatever and I'm interested I'll go see them. this sort of thing is not going to make you a new person or ultra successful over night but it could help you get there.

Dalai Lama admits that he's preaching though. I like preachers, my mum is currently training to become one. I dislike when preachers try to disguise themselves as "personal development experts" or "motivational speakers", because they're really just preachers. Usually when you add more syllables you're selling something beyond just the thoughts and ideas that you present (usually a book, honestly).
Maybe I watch too much Penn & Teller's Bullshit. I would probably pay a lot for the Dalai Lama as well. Some religions I'm willing to accept. Martha Stewart is not one of them. |

it can be really helpful for people to listen to ideas and motivational/inspirational concepts that are outside of themselves... it can be a pretty powerful thing. |

Tony Robbins - The Power Within, a seminar that really stuck out for me. Ive attended quite a few because my Mom loves them, its our thing.
Getting up and changing your state (people who know me hear me say/do this all the time). Thinking about a highly posative moment in your life, jumping around with your arms flailing and yelling at the top of your lungs can only be benificial, for you and the people around you (theres a slight comical factor in this method). By being posative and giving off posative energy thats what will come back to you. You get what you put out in this world. Something I use ALL the time. It sticks. I agree with John in regards to motivational speakers making an impact, IF you allow them. Lots of people go into seminars with closed minds which is why ideas or w/e dont get across. In my opinion. :embarrest: Last edited by Pussy*Kat; Mar 06, 08 at 09:58 AM. |
