Remember this, there's alot of really really fucked up area's of the world and if if it weren't for the USA fighting for our freedom North America or at least parts of it could very well be under heavy handed dictatorship.

Just like alot of parts Asia, The Middle East, Africa, Europe, U.S.S.R. (only 10 years or so ago), China, Parts of Central America, Parts of South America. Without the states being so powerful in the past and the present (especially in the past) What makes everyone so sure we'd be living the way we are?

There's about 6 000 000 000 people in the world and only under 1 000 000 000 live as free as us in North Ameica. When I say free I mean free to write shit like were writing about on the internet, free to speak our minds and do what we want

If there's top secret documents about some fucked up thing the states is going to do/did leaked to some dude who writes for some underground news website, why wouldn't they just take care of him before he can tell anyone?

I'm sure there's a much deeper reason that hasn't been told about the war in Iraq, I truely believe that, but its not as simple as cheaper oil prices.

Also the government needed a distraction to keep the people's minds of the horrible domestic situation, have you ever seen wag the dog?

i think its funny how quick canadians assume that all americans are ignorant war mongerers just because one managed to steal an election. Many americans oppose bush, also many simply don't know what is really going on because generally american's only know about the outside world through what their media tells them and there media is extremely sensationalist and biased. personally i think bush is a scarey mother fucker, as well as an incompetent fool. he's fucked up everything in that country, the economy is utter shit, his preliminary budget will be the biggest defecit in american history and the WTO still says that its overly optimistic. heh and rebuplicians are supposed to be about fiscial responsibility. then i don't even have to mention how bad he's fuckin over the environment and society, he appointed a major lobbist for Oil and mining groups to be the head of the department of the interior..how short sighted can you get? its like he's trying to the country back to the 1950's. what most frightens me is the fact that he's a hardcore evangelical protestant so he only thinks in Black/White or right/wrong thats definitly not a trait that you want someone who is supposed to be a diplomat to have. fuck even if he dosn't start anymore wars the american economy is likely to tank if this whole iraq thing drags out much longer, and if that happens the consequences will be profound, especially for those of us in canada.

Well I can't say I entirely agree with all of that but I just had to mention that you make some very accurate points. Just to add to what you were saying about Iraq and putting aside my opinions I'd just like to add some facts. But back to topic, I recently read a great article about this that I think goes a long way to accurately describing American people and why the world views America them the way it does.

It's a long article but very well written and based on a lot of actual interviews with all sorts of people. To quote the article, "Foreigners say our newspapers give little foreign news, which proves that we are insular - but that is nonsense. The reason that there is little foreign news is that so much happens in America and around the world because of America. America is the story! If you live in Belgium or Denmark, you're simply not making half an hour of news each night."

What I had reinforced from reading the article was that Americans really have a naive innocence about their actions. There is a real belief that the means justifies the ends and that they have nothing but noble intentions so even if things don't work out for the best as a result of their actions its okay.

Anyway on a personal level I have nothing against Americans. We are after all talking about 300,000,000 people! With in all of those people you will find people of every stripe some of whom have amazingly admirable qualities. I think to a large extent the American ideals and dreams are excellent but the way they have manifested has gotten away from them. What we are seeing at the moment is the sacrifice of freedom in the name of protecting it and this has in no way made anyone safer.

The lies and corruption in our governments are both relevant to one another and need to be addressed with compassion and understanding.

The reason you are being "hated" on for being American probably has a lot to do with you also being a soldier, which sadly my friend is nothing more than a career as a pawn in the power games of politicians. Right now in the middle east the war is a struggle to get oil in the hands of US markets.
