This was back in '93-'95. You think these big corporations are paying a broke rapper from Queensbridge named Nasir Jones to shout out their clothing brands in his underground album called Illmatic.

Rap wasn't the massive money it is today. None of these companies gave a fukk about rappers mentioning their brands. And they damn sure weren't paying them.

sure, rap wasnt all about money in 93 i guess thats why adidas paid run dmc in the mid 80s or why st ides paid eazy e and nwa in the late 80s.

check your facts, you dont know shit.

actually, adidas didn't pay Run DMC shit when they first made that song.

They just really liked their adidas shoes and made a song about.

They did set up deal with them afterwards, but the original tune was not endorsed or commissioned by Adidas.

well in 1993 (how old were you, like 6?) Snoop Dogg, maybe you've heard of him, released a pretty popular album called Doggy Style. It sold over 5 million copies. Oh and Dr Dre sold over 3 million copies of the Chronic. Never mind R&B... but I guess that's underground.

Prissypants will become famous soon enough
I think most rap and hip hop today can be encapsulated by an interview I saw with one rapper in which he discussed his new video (I can't remember who it was...probably no one of note). He was saying something along the lines of how innovative this video was and how it was like nothing anyone's ever seen before. He went on to describe it as a him and a bunch of his crew at a club with hot girls dancing all around him and his boys with his song playing in the background. Just totally partying, drinking and showing how much of a pimp/player he was... The big kicker was this: It was totally filmed in blacklight!!!

Yea....way to push the envelope....

Most kids who dress in the hip hop fashions and talk about how "rap is their life" can barely string together two lines that rhyme and usually talk about a bunch of shit they've never actually experienced save vicariously through what they've read in "Pound" and "Vibe" magazine or watched on muchmusic rapcity...

Anyone who's listened to rap and hip hop for awhile now will admit that about 90% of what is coming out now is utter crap...

^I agree with the above post that that's pretty lame. YO MAYNE WE GOT THIS NEW SHIT DOG, IT'S SICK, YOU NEVER SEEN NOTHIN LIKE THIS BEFO' FO' FO'.

And then it turns out to be a club video w/ black lights lol.

This video pokes fun at all the Stereotypes of Hiphop videos.

The Roots - What they do

One thing though, 90% of what's being released isn't crap. But 90% of Hiphop that's visible is crap.

I hate when people take a statement like "Hiphop is dead" out of context. It does not mean Hiphop is dead. It means Hiphop is dead on a mainstream level. (I'm not saying you said this)

/\ Totally agree with you... There is still alot of underground stuff that is good but the visible stuff...the stuff that most of the kids that "live for hip hop" seem to like is total shite! :)

PS: The video with the captions is way better...I think the link you put doesn't have them...

ie: "really apple juice" for the champagne and "severe butt cramp" when the girl grabs her ass

LOVE IT!

Run DMC didn't get paid shit back then.

No rappers were getting paid to mention clothing brands in their songs back then. Especially not new york rappers. So you're wrong.

nwa got paid by st. ides to do a commercial. They were well established in the mainstream. biggie did one too. I didn't say anything about st ides or commercials though. I said major clothing brands.

He mentions guess 1 time on the entire album... that gives it a "Hiphop pass" in your book? That's how you determine what to dress like? Andre 3000 wears turbans and fur pants I don't see you wearing that shit.

The avatar? check the other thread.

lol @ join date feb '08

Were you even here when this thread was made. Go back and look through it, chump. This whole discussion about fashion happened because some loser brought it up, saying I got my style from XXL. When in fact I was keepin it hip hop back before XXL even existed. And mad people mentioned Guess in their songs over the years. lol @ 1 person. I wore that stuff cuz I liked it. I loved my north face jacket and timbs. I still rock that shit sometimes.

If that isn't you in your avatar lets see a picture of your ugly self. I want to see you :embarrest:
