This week we introduce DJ Null Space, who has only been with us a short period of time. His shows on the station involve a one hour set by himself, Followed by a Guest slot for an hour, He has already brought us DJs such as JesseCobra and Raj Deep, and intends to bring even more fresh DJ's to the Station. Scratch 'n Spin: When did you first start DJing and what was your inspiration? Null Space: I guess I first starting putting together mixtapes around '96, without quite knowing what I was doing. I was using 2 portable CD players and a Radio Shack (or, as you say in England, "Tandy") 4 channel mixer and had never heard a proper DJ set or been to any dance events. It was mostly ambient and chillout stuff. I just knew that I wanted to make a CD with the songs blended together seamlessly. DJing with turntables and a club mixer didn't happen until 2000 or so. My inspiration has always been a deep interest in different grooves and sounds. Something draws me to them. SnS: Have you always spun Progressive? NS: No, I haven't. I started out "spinning" ambient/chill stuff, and then got into Trance. I still find some trancier stuff that I like, but I'm really into the more Tribal & Progressive House tracks now. I don't really like pigeonholing myself into one genre since I play whatever I feel is a good track, no matter what genre it claims to hail from. If it fits into my ever-evolving style, I play it! SnS: Do you currently have guest or resident slots? NS: Aside from Scratch 'n Spin, I'm currently unemployed at the moment. :( SnS: What's the Progressive scene like over there (US) now? NS: At the moment I can only speak for the Boston area. There's a lot of great music coming from the area's producers, but the club scene is really at a standstill. Things are stagnant lately with the clubs in that the promoters are really going only for Hip-Hop and NY Hard House. With John Debo and Ali Ajami no longer pushing Progressive in the big clubs (Avalon/Axis) there's really no great want for the deeper sounds (which I think only increases the need). Of course, this is just the "popular" crowds. he underground scene is still where it has been musically, but as far as events, the economy I think is influencing a big stagnation. Hopefully with the economy getting better more people will be able to go out to the clubs and the scene will get better as a whole. SnS: Any upcoming names/labels in the progressive genre that you know of? NS: Wow, too many to mention. A lot of good production is going on right now. Off the top of my head, I can think of LSM Productions, Fade, Baroque... labels that are already great and will hopefully only get better. Producers that come to mind are Chris Micali, Steve Porter, Deep Horizons. Oh, and then there's the Shurhit Records crew of course! :) SNS: Finally, you co-own Shurhit records with JesseCobra, who's also done a guest set on the station, how's that going and do you have any future plans? NS: We're getting ready to officially release our first two records onto the masses. The first is JesseCobra's "The Fuse" with a remix by me on the flip. The second is an absolutely great Progressive Trance track by Mindless from Sweden. A Tribally influenced remix by himself is on the B-Side. Shurhit will be a great label, I believe, because we're really trying to pull some of the best unfounded talent from all over the world. There's Simex from the Boston area also, M'Ocean from New Jersey, Tom Sawyer from Panama, and many more unannounced producers that I really can't talk about openly at this time. Just keep an eye on www.shurhitrecords.com for all the latest details. You can catch Null Spaces 'Boston Breaks Show' every Friday Morning from 3am-5am BST, or Thursday Nights 10pm-12pm EDT.
