scratching (flares)
can anyone here actually do flares?
ive been trying for a while and its just so damn hard. sometimes ill spend like 15 mins straight just trying to do it and by the end ill be sweating because i cant get the coordination correct for those who can do it, any tips? do you keep the hand on the record the whole time when you do it? or do you only put the hand on the record when you're bringing it back? |

I can do them... Just practice doing them slowly. I find that if you want to practice a new technique, turn the table off and skracth with the platter not moving. This allows you to learn it in slow motion and you can work your way faster once you get the motion down. Not only will you learn the technique that way but you will gain better control over your hands that way.
So try that out and let me know how it works out for you. :) |

thats a good suggestion precise. ive used that technique for learning chirps and i havent tried it with flares.
also what ive found to help, although it hasnt with flares, is to close your eyes while practicing so you're focused more on the sound being produced than the movement of your hands |

um...how many times have you seen me do them?
the way i got it was just making wide arcs with my record hand, and then cutting once then backwards. just go slowly. im working on doing them double speed right now (twice the bpm of the record) buts its damn hard. |
