I've stopped trying to be politically correct when it comes to differentiating genres. You can never make everyone happy because you'll always have elitist assholes trying to argue their point across and usually it's just for the sake of arguing.
I split the genres in that I don't really consider artists like Kid Koala and the other hip hop artists you mentioned to be trip hop.
Trip hop for me usually consists of female vocals and abstract beats, it's usually mellow and dark, although there are exceptions (massive attack, Sneaker Pimps minus the female vocalist, and Tricky although apparently he hates his music being classified as trip hop).
I guess it's really personal in how you define you're music, in terms of hip hop a lot of people refuse to call Aesop Rock and Buck 65 hip hop because they don't "rap" enough. I personally think that's stupid because they're two of my favorite hip hop artists but that's besides the point.
