Trip hop is the genre of music I listen to most, I absolutely love it and thanks Rhianna for sending me those lovely Terranova tracks!

It really depends on what you mean by trip-hop. Some Europeans consider the more hip-hop influenced IDM to be trip-hop (ie. Amon Tobin, Hexstatic, DJ Food, Kid Koala and damn near anything else on the Ninja Tune label). There's also the mellow shit like Gus Gus, Lamb, Portishead, etc., which I've heard called trip-hop as well. How do you guys split the genres?

I guess it's kind of besides the point at least for me; I listen to both.

I've stopped trying to be politically correct when it comes to differentiating genres. You can never make everyone happy because you'll always have elitist assholes trying to argue their point across and usually it's just for the sake of arguing.

I split the genres in that I don't really consider artists like Kid Koala and the other hip hop artists you mentioned to be trip hop.

Trip hop for me usually consists of female vocals and abstract beats, it's usually mellow and dark, although there are exceptions (massive attack, Sneaker Pimps minus the female vocalist, and Tricky although apparently he hates his music being classified as trip hop).
I guess it's really personal in how you define you're music, in terms of hip hop a lot of people refuse to call Aesop Rock and Buck 65 hip hop because they don't "rap" enough. I personally think that's stupid because they're two of my favorite hip hop artists but that's besides the point.

Yay! You actually get that! Karma to you. :) I get a little irked at genre zealots. I like to do the genre definition thing myself, but I realize that every single distinction I make is utterly subjective. I define Trip-Hop like you do, although I have no idea where to place Kid Koala. Turntablism is I think where he ended up in my music repository. Mind you, where does Trip-Hop end and Downtempo begin? Argh. I suppose I'll find some spot where drawing the line in the sand makes sense.

That said, I have fun arguing genres because there are usually a few artists that don't conform to genre boundaries and arguing's a great way to find out about 'em. Social engineering at its finest. A quick way to find an argument with metalheads: Define metal as a subgenre of rock. :P

What she said. I gave up long ago trying to split trip hop up. I just call a bunch of stuff trip hop now for lack of a better name even though most people hate being put into the trip hop genre.

Ladyshades, I still have a shit load of stuff I want to send you but I've been away. Next time I see you on msn I'll get right on it.

Trip Hop is my #1, I *heart* it! If anyone has any really really good stuff you think I should have let me know.

I'm having a really hard time finding new stuff. Trip Hop just isn't what it used to be.
