so my questioning this isn't quite as rediculous as some of you are insinuating. Obviously I have my own views on this thing and I don't act on most of my impulses in akward social situations because of it.
It's very interesting to see how everyone has quite differing views about such a seemingly simple subject. I guess it really isn't that simple?

some say its cool, some say it isn't. What I get from this is everyone has their own perspective on it, and that's basically all I wanted to know.

I think the main thing is just to be open to social situations but don't press them. When you press, you open up yourself to disappointment. When you search too hard you can be disappointed.

Just go with it; if that chance social situation pops up then don't be afraid to say something. Don't worry too much on calculating action or you'll just stress yourself out and get nervous like you said. It's all about the ways in which you relate and communicate. The more you open up to new groups of friends and daily situations the higher chance you have of meeting someone who connects on that level of fluidity.

to me, it doesn't matter. however, if i look disgruntled/not in the mood to chit-cat, please don't approach me. Or if it's in an inappropriate situation/place, don't either...obviously.

inappropriate place example:

innocent/light flirting when i'm at work is fine. (you kind of have to expect that if you're a young female cashier/attendant.) but...try not to take it farther than that. i find it interesting the quantity of guys (my age...& even slightly older o__O) who make an attempt to engage in heavy/serious flirting with me. (on saturday, oh my...this one regular...jesus! o__O) but i'm pretty sure it's not me. my uniform's a...uniform, & i don't do my hair or makeup. i recon that they're just lonely &/or, blatently speaking, don't have access to that many females.

i got side tracked. but my main point is that if it's a non-inappropriate situation/place, go ahead. i, personally, have never thought of a bus stop as a pick-up location, & i still won't be using it as such. but to each their own. = ) for your situation, if a girl is listening to an iPod, bop your head to your music's beat to make her smile. that would make me smile. :) or...hmm...tap your foot to your music's beat or whatever, man. if she's a real music lover, she'll appreciate your enthusiasm...or something along those lines. =P like others have said, music is definately a good conversation starter for sure. even with just a friend, & especially in your situation...since most pple. listen to an mp3 player on public transit, right?
