Advice on travelling Eastern Europe
I'll be going to eastern Europe this summer for about a month and I'd like some first hand do's and dont's from people in this forum. Ive done a fair bit of research already into locations that I think are must see, but im looking for first hand advice from you fine people.
Countries I'll be visting (or try to at least): Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Slovenia and maaayyyyyybe Spain if time/money permits. Ive already visited a few of these countries already 2 years ago, but I'd like some more recent experiences or stories from some of yous. |

Only problems I had were pick pockets. I caught 3 trying to get into my bag while it was on my back and who knows how many I didn't catch. Those tiny little padlocks'll stop em though. Or at least stop em long enough for you to realize what's up and start yelling at them. At that point they usually run away or apologize.
Oh yeah, and if a guy on the street tells you that his brother is big business in Bulgaria don't see if he wants to go for a drink with you. You'll end up in a brothel with the manager yelling at you saying you owe him $500 US for champagne that the prostitutes you turned down ordered. Brother = brothel with a Bulgarian accent. |

haha, ive seen it, its one of my favourite comedies. I actually visited Bratislava prior to seeing the movie and its an awesome little city, beautiful girls and everything is super super cheap, the friends im going with are refusing to see it though...
Im planning on bringing my laptop, any advice for or against this? Also with the lock thing, Ive heard that if you put a lock on your bag youre just asking to get robbed, I guess preventive measures make you look like a target. I will definetily be bringing my own combination lock (I dont want to lose a key and be screwed) for my lockers in whatever hostels I stay at. Thanks for the advice Jono, also I'll gladly take any advice or recommendations for visiting Croatia since its in the area, I might just visit it if the chance arises. |

Locks may have made me a target but I came home with all my stuff and I have some pretty hilarious pick pocket stories.
If you're taking trains a lot of people will tell you to be careful of Gypsies. I just got drunk with them and tried to speak French (our only common tongue) until the border guard made them leave the train because they didn't have passports. The big fat gypsy women smuggling cigarettes were really nice cause they bribed me with cakes and sandwiches for my window seat (you can hide more cigarettes in the seat by the window). Dunno why they needed to though cause they still handed the border guard a handful of cash. Worked out for me though. |

Tell everyone you're Canadian.. Everyone loves Canadians... This way, you can bring your own liquor into restaurants and pour your own drinks... and if they ask you to stop, or question you at all, just reply with a simple "It's okay, I'm Canadian."
One of my friends went to Europe last year of a huge Rugby tournament, and after every game, the whole team got invited to partys simply because they were Canadian. "You're Canadian, eh?" "Yeah" "I LOVE CANADIANS, FIRST ROUNDS ON ME!" |
