Peter, unless you DESPERATELY need them, cut them up until you get it (the debt and your job situation) under control, then get in touch with the companies to send you new cards.

GYM you don't HAVE TO pay do you? Internet? do you own the modem or is it a rental. If you own the modem you can always cancell the net and when you have more money just get it started again just like that? saves ya 90 bucks rite there

EVERYONE IS IN DEBT!!!!

its just a fact of life...wether its a car loan, student loan or a mortgage.

BUT there is such a thing a good debt....like mortgages and bank loans and such.

they build equity in assests.

-Your debt however could be a good thing. PAY off about 30% more than your monthly payments for about one year.

-after that period, you should have your fico score up to speed again and this will allow you to get a substancial line of credit or a personal loan.

- get the line of credit or a personal loan. banks usally offer these products with interest rates lower than credit cards.(youl save lots of money.)

-then consolitadte your credit card debt with your line of credit and pay off the line at the lower interest rate.

-ALL these financial manouvers will do nothing but build up your credit report, wich is the MOST important thing in this society! WAY,WAY more so than school. anybody who says otherwise arnt learning the right things.

Being in debt can be very stressful, hang in there.

first of all, go into your bank and sign up for internet banking! [i'm assuming you don't already have this since you said you called in for your credit card balance?]

that will help you, at least once it's paid off. that way you can keep track of what you owe, what you've spent, etc. WHENEVER you want just by going on the net. it's easier then the phone, and more convenient so you're more likely to keep checking it.

either way, try going full time or get another p/t job.
get rid of some expenses. don't go out as much, cut down on little things like eating out, buying magazines and cd's, etc.
also if you have things you don't want/need try selling some stuff on ebay. depending you what you have you can make some extra cash that way.

well the internet banking is more for AFTER he's paid off the debt to help keep track of it.

things like ebay and shit you can always do from a friend/parents computer or something. there are also free dialup services out there [if you have a 56k modem or something] which you can use for little things like that which cost no money, but you might have to wait longer.

there are lots of options.

From my understanding you still live at home. First of all take a tupperware container put your credit cards in it then fill it with water and put it in the freezer, this way your credit cards are'nt available for frivolous spending but are there in the case of an emergency. Secondly, get off your duff and find a full time job. Your monthly expences are limited, say you get a job paying $10.00/hour, you'll walk with roughly $600.00 every two weeks. Now take $300.00 from each paycheque and put it on your credit card, this still leaves you with close to $500.00 each month in expendable income; and seeing that you live at home and don't have to pay for food is a fair bit of money to blow on senseless stuff. By sticking to this you'll have yourself out of debt in close to 8 months which is nothing at all. If the $500.00 is not enough in expendable income, then keep your part-time job as well, and find a full time job that works around it.

It's really not that hard to do, $5000.00 is a burp when it comes to debt.

Just putting them in a drawer doesn't mean much.

If you are really serious about resolving this issue then cut the cards up and when you are ready just call up the issuing companies and ask for replacements.

If you want to live a certain lifestyle then you have to pay the price.

If you think $5000 is a lot of debt... well it isn't. I have monthly expenditures of just over $2000 which is auto decuted from my bank account. :(

Trust me... the day all those issues are taken care of I'd be pimpin in Cancun.

I should be about 160 by then.

just wait till your 370k in debt like me. next summer it will be around half a million i owe.

its pretty funny when you think about it.

hahaha.

debt is life man. you never get out of it, if you want to get ahead in life. to get ahead you have to buy property. debt. to start a company. debt. nothing you can do, unless you win the lottery.

Groceries still account for a fraction of monthly expenditures. I'd say in this case cutting out luxuries isn't enough. You're a grown man, it's time you started acting that way and get yourself a real job. I know that may sound harsh but hey it's reality and that ain't always nice, fluffy ,and pink. From the sounds of it you've been coddled far too long, you got yourself into this mess, and now it's time to get yourself out. Just as I said before 5k ain't shit.
