adbusters
have you people heard of Adbusters magazine? probably not, most of you are a little 2 mainstream for this underground magazine. Nathaniel/Lovekat lent me a copy to read and it really spoke to me. I found out that the fake hair I've been selling is made in sweatshops where children make as little as 10 cents an hour. On average, children get paid 2 cents for every pair of $19.99 Hot Topic goggles they make. The cows that died to produce my 7-11 hamburger were fed bovine growth horomones, made by the evil Monsanto corporation, that will give me cancer and sadly prevent me from eating more hamurgers. The end result of all this consumption is leading the planet to destruction.
So I've decided I'm going to get a lot more politically active. The first thing i'm going to protest is the welfare cuts and the lack of housing for the homeless because I'm on welfare and I have no home... only this couch the kind residents of Dogwood house let me sleep on. And with what little money I have, I'm going to be a more aware consumer. Me and Lovekat are going to the headquarters to Adbusters this week to buy the adbusters corporate American flag. We would have bought it online but no one will issue us a credit card :( |

You're right about this board being 'mainstream,' but Adbusters is about as 'underground' as Micheal Moore. Then again, trying to live better shouldn't be some kind of a contest. So, that said, kudos to you for deciding to try being a more active citizen and conscious consumer. The less shit you buy, the less you find you want shit. Its a virtuous cycle. If you're serious about becoming more active, or at least learning, you might find www.zmag.org and www.vancouver.indymedia.org interesting. |

Yeah, Adbusters is no longer an underground magazine, but it is still pretty cool. However, I've noticed that as Adbuster gains popularity it has also begun to sell out. I saw an adbusters calendar this year and some other un-magazine related merchandise...now kudos to them if it's going to help their cause..but if it's going to the pockets of the Editors..then hail to the hypocrites of the magazine world. If you're really interested in reading more about this stuff..try reading some of Naomi Watt's books. She deals with Logos and coporate stuff and globalization in her two books. 'No Logo' and 'Fences and Windows'. |

Well if this isn't some troll then good for you for trying to make a change. The reason there is some animocity from some of these responses is because there is a widespread phenomenon in the activist scene, and it's essentially being greedy to do good. People get so caught up trying to make a change for the better that they get caught up in a self rightous trip and think that THEIR way is the ONLY way or plainly feel that they are better than folks who aren't involved in making a change.
This is very dangerous because many folks will use this as an excuse to pigeon hole the whole movement as being a trivial soul searching angsty tree hugging community. That's the last thing you want as the power is in the majority, and what was described is a minority. Some people are too wedged in their comfort zones and you will burn yourself out if you can't just stand back and accept some people's apathy. ... Anyways, check out: http://www.mawovancouver.org/ http://parecon.org/ http://calendar.resist.ca/month.php (that calander should be more than enough if you wanna get involved) and if you're not busy come out to: Britannia Community Center -=1661 Napier & Commercial=- @ 10am - 7pm this Sunday the 22nd, it's a free conference and will help you start making connections in your community. Peace. |

personally i think adbusters is kinda hipacritical.
a magazine that is against advertising and brainwashing and globalization that charges its customers and is basically one big political advertisement? we did a class in school all about it, and i went into the class really enjoyin it, but now, not so much. its not underground, they sell it at chapters. you'd think an underground truely political magazine would be harder to find then at a massive company like chapters who's in ka-hoots with the devil starbucks, and it wouldnt cost its politcally aware buyers alot of bling. make a statement, thats cool, but make it so everyone, including the not so rich, can afford to see\hear these statements. adbusters = stupid. (i think chapters has some excellent magazines) i also think that as far as huge corporations go, starbucks would be considered an angel, not a devil. oh, and $7.95 is not an expensive magazine. go read it at the library if you can't afford it, whiner. i think you are making some seriously ignorant remarks.... |
