Funny thing is, most the people that seem to be speaking out against long distance relationships are stemming from some bad experience in the past (Maryah's is the only one I've read that seems to offer much of constructivity, that's why I say it).
That being said, the point I'm making is that yes, long distance relationships can work given the right set of circumstances. More often than not I find they don't work though.
Usually it takes a lot of commitment on both sides of the fence there. If you don't know if the other side has that level of commitment (note: know, not think...) then there's a decent buffer of failure. Also, if you're still figuring out the relationship itself, the distance detaches you even more as the first stages of the relationship, which are pretty important IMHO to the relationship itself, are missed out on and you just get no connection with the person.
That being said, it can work.
