figuring out what you want to DO
I still don't know what I want to be. I thought taking a year off school would help but it really hasn't. I know i'm interested in people aspects so I want to take physchology, sociology and anthropology(which I heard is the study of culture) but I don't know if I should even bother because who knows if any of these courses will help me out for the future. If i was rich it would be a different story but I'm not and neither are my parents so half or more of the payments going to be coming out of my own pocket and I don't want to waste my time and money..
I'm also interested in production of music which is a completely different thing to take up. Man,it sucks so much how we have to pay so much to get education..I can't exactly get a student grant or loan either because my highschool grades were absolute shit. Why is everything so hard to figure out? |

Hey, doll. I've been fucking around at cap for 2.5 years now, taking whatever I want, and having a fucking blast. I've paid for the entire thing myself, too. GET A JOB NOW and you'll totally be able to do it!
There's no way you'll be able to figure out what you want to do until you get in there and start trying things out. |

same with robyn i took 6 classes and kept it in 3 days. definatley all about good scheduling.. along with the classes i had 2 jobs for a few months too. its a do-able thing.. u just have to jsut giver and push ureself to do so. student loan isn't a bad idea, but now that ive asked around most kids just ask their parents for money and pay them back (if ure parents get a loan from the bank they get hella less interest than bc/canada student loans... i know right now for me its adding $70 EACH MONTH on top of my loans.. sucks to be me, i know) check out a career counciller if u needta. see what courses/diploma/degree is available that would strike an interest. right now i have my heart set for advertising/design, but im startin to wuss out and my mind is wandering towards fashion marketing and even to be flight attendent.. yea its tough to be young and not knowing what to do. just do ure research and learn about the options.

for me, i dont ever want to know what i will be. im taking a diploma course at cap for studio art and loving every minute of it because its my passion. the diploma really isnt going to get me much in life when it comes to jobs, but im getting personal growth, skills are developing that i never imagined i would have, and i find myself enjoying waking up at 5 am because im going to school. also finding that the majority of the people im in school with are 25+ makes me realize i have so much time to figure shit out.
i took a year off, and was in the same position, and still am. what ive learned in the year ive been back at school is that i really do need to do some sort of art at all times in my life, otherwise i dont think i would truely be happy. most importantly i have learned what i dont want to do. my friend erin has been able to attend sfu as a full time student taking courses that intrest her for 3 years now, and shes been working as well and hasnt taken out a loan. shes also been able to travel alot. shes one of the smartest people i know, and she still doesnt know what she wants to be. still testin the water i guess. if you dont want to waste the money now, then work and save up. or take the classes you enjoy, and take some that are mandatory for all things like english and get it outta the way. to put it all condensed - dont worry about not having chosen your path yet, you got plenty of time. save up some money, take some courses you'd enjoy, and it is possible to go to school without loans. |

YUP if there is one thing i could say to all the youth out there, JUST KEEP GOING. because you have a whole lifetime to decide what it is that will occupy your time - but if you are at all inclined to do post secondary, go do it and take everything you find interesting and see what you like best, and where yur talents lie Because in all truth most BAs are just resume stuff and won't really get you a job, they just prove that you can apply yourself in an active learning situation - So you may as well get it in something you enjoy and that has the potential to expose you to career paths - I personally (being an English Lit grad) think you should follow your heart and interest rather then being too concerned with practicality And don't wait til you know what you want to do ...time makes few things more clear..just go and and try it out! |

volunteering / temping is good too.
gets you out there meeting people who could potentially give you a career, and also lets you try your hand at things. i would say that in a lot of industries, it's not really so much your schooling as the people you know. having both is a good combination. always remember theres always time....I went through 4 different types of careers possibilities before i decided what i wanted to focus on. Im only 25, and already I'm doubting that what i went to college for is really what I want to do.
So its kinda back to the drawing board....dip your fingers into a small portion of all those areas youre interested in, and see which keeps your interest peaked more, and roll with that one....if you do decide its not what you wanted, you can always make a change.... |

Dont worry about a career right away. People put too much pressure on themselves, when it comes to this aspect of there lives. Just take a step back from everything and take a good look a the big picture. Imo one should enjoy what they do for the next 40yrs, and if there really isnt anything you can see yourself doing right now, then just try to enjoy life.
Your views and interests will change and mature along with you. Maybe a couple of yrs down the road, youll find that a certain path that you didnt like before, and now it sounds really good and is something you can see yourself doing. I have been going through this process for the past 5 yrs and to be honest I still have no clue.... and I have wasted alot of money trying to get this "clue". So recently after causing myself all this stress, I have decided to travel and see the world. This wont happen for a little while as I am also paying off a student loan, but atleast its a goal to strive for, and maybe I just mite find something while I am abroad. Perhaps this is something that you should maybe try.. just decide on something that you would really like to do and go with it. It may not be a life altering path, but atleast it will focus you a bit and get yah going in some sort of direction. So yah I hope that made sense. Iam sick and my minds kind of scattered. |

in all honesty there arent many people out there that know what they want to do in life. I have thought about MANY things I'd like to be, but you jstu have to find something you enjoy doing. who cares what it is aslong as you enjoy it thats all that matters. right?

you're not even 19 yet right? dont worry about it.
go out and try a bunch of different things, maybe go work at a few different places, read some books..it might take a few years to come to you but time is on yourside p.s education is fuckin cheap relative to pretty mcuh everywhere else in the world, as well as how much it pays off in the future, even if it is only a sociology degree. Also student loans are pretty easy to get.. Last edited by SEAN!; Jun 16, 04 at 07:55 AM. |

"try a bunch of different things"... not as easy as it sounds. i feel like im stuck in a retail rut right now and ive been ASKING ppl for oppurtunities to shadow their career just to see if the real deal interests me. and its tough.. networking/connecting is really hard. yea courtz and i are both young.. but we're both 2 eager youngins who at least want to know wahts ahead. clears up a lot of unanswered questions and its also nice to pay for schooling that will actually relate to a future career. last thing i want is to go through this art school deal..and end up in a TOTALLY different field of work.
