Benifits of Sex.
What if I told you that there was something out there that, among other things, could help you look younger, live longer, relieve stress, and lose weight? No, it’s not some new ‘wonder drug’ or exotic herbal remedy – it’s good ol’ fashion sex.
There are, of course, the obvious benefits of lovemaking - it’s pleasurable and helps create intimacy between you and your partner. However, there are a whole bunch of other advantages that sex offers. For instance: Pain Reliever: Forget aspirin – have sex the next time you’re in need of a pain reliever! During lovemaking, the hormone oxytocin is secreted, which causes endorphins (hormone-like chemicals that resemble morphine) to be released. Studies have found that this rise in oxytocin levels can elevate the pain threshold and help relieve aches and pains. So instead of using a headache as an excuse for abstaining, turn to sex as a way to relieve it! Stress Reliever: Not only is sex relaxing and can help you think more clear-headed, but studies have found that people who have regular sex are able to manage stress better. Which isn’t surprising when you think about how calm and carefree you feel after having an orgasm. Oh, and for those of you who experience tension in your neck and shoulders when under stress - a 20 minute romp will increase your breathing capacity, which alleviates the build up of carbon dioxide levels (the root cause of constricted blood vessels in this area). Sleep Better: During lovemaking, the levels of the sleep-inducing hormone oxytocin can be 5 times higher than normal, which results in falling into a peaceful slumber after climaxing. So forget warm milk - a regular dose of lovemaking can lead to a deeper and more restful sleep, which will help you feel more refreshed and alert throughout the day. Great Workout: Sex is a great form of exercise that requires no fancy equipment or a gym membership. During lovemaking your body experiences physical changes equal to an intense exercise workout. It gets your heart racing, increases energy, raises your metabolic rate, stretches all kinds of muscles and of course burns off calories. An average session (1/2 hour) of lovemaking burns approximately 150 calories. Having sex 3 times a week for a year is equivalent to jogging 75 miles. Get the Blood Flowing: This isn’t just a figure of speech – sex actually is beneficial to increasing the blood flow to your brain and other organs of your body. As fresh blood arrives, all your muscles and organs are flooded with oxygen and hormones, which stimulates and keep them healthy. And as the ‘used’ blood is removed, waste products that cause tiredness and can lead to illness are flushed out. Hormone Therapy: Regular lovemaking boosts testosterone and estrogen levels in both women and men. Reported benefits of testosterone include fortifying bones and muscles, keeping hearts healthy and increasing levels of the good kind of cholesterol. Sex also increases a woman’s estrogen level, which helps keeps vaginal tissues supple and is beneficial in preventing heart disease. For men, estrogen helps a man to develop the softer, more ‘feminine’ side of their personalities. During sex, the hormone DHEA is also secreted and during orgasms the DHEA level is 5 times higher than normal. While studies are still being conducted on DHEA, some reported benefits are that it helps to promote bone growth, maintains and repairs tissues, keeps skin healthy, contributes to cardiovascular health, balances the immune system, improves cognition, and increases longevity. Wow! Lower Cholesterol: These days there’s a lot of interest surrounding maintaining a healthy cholesterol level. Go figure that sex is one way to do this! Not only is sex beneficial in that it aids in lowering the overall cholesterol level, but it also tips the HDL/LDL (good kind/bad kind) cholesterol balace towards the HDL side. Immunity booster: Some researchers have found that couples who have sex a couple times a week have increased levels of the chemical immunoglobulin A. This chemical helps your body ward off infections like colds and the flu. So instead of an apple a day to keep the doctor away… Improved Mood: We all know that sex is a great way to bring a smile to your face. However, studies have also found that sex is a great remedy for improving mild depression. Lovemaking releases endorphins that make you feel great and help block depression. Sex also increases the level of the hormone oestrogen, which helps to banish the blues. Beauty Regime: Can’t afford regular trips to spa? Try sex as a beauty treatment! Studies have found that during sex women produce the hormone oestrogen, which helps keeps hair shiny and skin nice and smooth. Pleasurable, relaxing lovemaking can also reduce your chances of having dermatitis, rashes, and blemishes. And we all know about the great glow you get after sex – can’t get that result from any type of face cream! So the next time you and your partner are getting busy beneath the sheets, take pleasure not only in the actual experience – but in the knowledge of all the physical and mental benefits you’re experiencing!
