trying to find a job
ok...so I'm moving out with my boifriend in a couple weeks and I've been trying to find a job.
I've got the experience, and I've never found it hard to get a job before but I just cant seem to find anything, or anyone willing to even give me a call back. I'm starting to get stressed because I need to find something and yet no one seems to be hiring. I dont know the area well enuff around here so I dont even know where to be looking. I've looked all over downtown and Richmond Center, for fucks sake I've handed out over 56 resumes.... I never thought I would ever have trouble finding a job and now I'm really starting to doubt myself. This is depressing. |

i could ask around..
i'm assuming your looking in richmond?
i know a few people who live there with jobs.. not the greatest mind you, some at Mcdonalds (blah) but it's a job right? if you want i might be able to get them to refer you.....(that guarntees an interview) and i know that the mcdonalds in richmond centre is hiring right now McDonalds is yucky, but it = money |

You picked a crappy time of the year to start job hunting, but there are openings out there. Don't expect an immediate reply to your resumes, some have a timeframe open to collect as many as they can, sort, then call back.
Other jobs are posted just so a company can see what the job market is like. Not all postings are actual openings. Just be persistent and something will come through. Your self doubt is natural during a job hunt when you don't get a call back. 56 resumes isn't bad, you might want to look at how your resume is worded if you don't get a bite after sending out 100 of them. I did notice a few shops on Robson Street that had help wanted signs in the window. Good luck. Last edited by MC Hammered; Jan 11, 02 at 05:56 PM. |

I'm on the same boat
I just started looking for work. I've had a nice few months off but now it's time to get my ass in gear and start the 9-5 all over again. Don't lose hope though. 56 resumes might seem like a lot but Winstons right it is a fairly rough time of the year to be looking for jobs so don't take it personal.
Good Luck with it I'll keep an eye out for ya. |

Apply at Starbuck's! I know there's one RIGHT in your neck of the woods.
mmm...coffee. And while you're at it, give me a call sometime cos I miss you. Myra (goood luck m'dear) P.S.- if the situation gets really difficult, I have two telemarketing places I can reccomend to you, the work is a little mundane, but it pays pretty well and would be okay to stick with just until you find a job because they hire on the spot.. keep in touch :379: |

I am in the same boat. Vancouver just doesn't seem to have enough jobs to fit demand right now. Luckily I have the option of going elsewhere for work. However, those of you who can't, don't give up. Look in Surrey, Burnaby, Delta...not just the area in which you live in, is the best advice. Good luck.

Don't wait for them to call you..
:Kam: The very first time i was looking for a job I did the same thing...applied everywhere and just waited....I learned that in you want a job YOU have to call them...1) makes you seem genuinely interested in the job 2) more personal cause the manager knows who you are and not just a piece of paper ..so ya hand the resume to the manager directly...if not, ask when the manager will be there and go back then. Be open!! Disgustingly friendly if you have to :284: !!
GOOD LUCK!! |

look around in places like knight n day, earls, milestones and stuff for waitressing... its a slow time for the restaurant business but i'm sure theres plenty of openings around
uLL be paid minimum wage but u get TONS of tips tons of tips baby. yur average day will be like a 5 hour shift = 40 bucks then tips another 60-80 bucks so a day u'll be making around 100 bucks which is pretty good.. minus tax roughly 70-80 bucks a day its a pretty good job for meeting alot of new people and improving your social skills when dealing with tons of different customers. just a thought |
