Thats horrible.
But a word about everyones suggestions to get pepper spray... I was listening to a policewoman talk about keeping yourself safe in Vancouver. Most of the auidence had been attacted in some way, and many had gotten pepper spray or some kind of weapon like a knife in their purse or bag. This is apparently alot more dangerous, because in a situation where an attacker comes after you, you wont be thinking clearly enough to use it properly. So what happens is the attacker grabs your weapon and uses it against you. She said that while theres a very very small percent of people who will be able to think fast enough to not only grab pepperspray and use it properly in a panicy situation, you are more likely to end up getting yourself hurt more. So be careful with carrying around things like that. |

It's also the same reason why guards and staff in jails don't carry weapons in the presence of inmates, incase an inmate grabs it and uses it against him.
This sounds bad. Go to the police, they'll be all over this shit and send out notices and stuff and they'll also alert the media that there's a wacko around the area where you were assaulted. |

although all these self defense tricks are great and all... it's very rare that in such a circumstance you'll have the presence of mind to remember which body parts to aim at, with what pressure, in what order, etc. the greatest tool a girl has in that kind of circumstance is her voice. if he's just being pushy, tell him firmly and loudly "NO", or "LEAVE" (if you're abroad, preferably in the local language.) if he attempts to grab you yell, scream, or otherwise make a fuss. usually these guys aren't out to seriously hurt you, they just get carried away, and as soon as you yell and make it into a big deal and attract attention, they'll run away. i yelled when a guy grabbed me in florence and tried to kiss me and he freaked out, apologized a million times, and ran away. i think my yelling, thereby showing him how seriously i took it, scared him even more than his advances scared me, ha.

Thats probnly one of the scaryest things I fear when traveling alone as a female. So glad your safe!
I remember being followed by a young bloke in Sydney once. Luckly I managed to make a move were he couldnt keep up and hid in a few stores for awhile. I also took a diffrent longer bus route home that day too make sure he didnt follow me home. |
