So stressed

So I haven't received a paycheck in 5 weeks, and I'm beyond broke. I'm so stressed out, i just broke out in tears and had to go take my break from work. My last day of work is Saturday and my boss is telling me i won't get paid till next wednesday! can they do that?? To add to that I haven't gotten any commision for anything I've sold because I am new!! So I have completely no motivation to sell...it's like i've been giving money away to other workers. .....I have just enough groceries to hopefully last me the weekend, then what will i do? I can't borrow money, I already owe my mom and owe more for my visa bill. I really need a hug right now :( I have a huge headache and tummy ache

Make sure u have hopefully been keeping track of your hours so that they dont rip u off on ur paystub.

5 weeks? Way against the labour code.

I'm pretty sure it states that you have to be paid within 3 or 4 weeks of the time worked. And you need to be paid at least semimonthly.

Talk to HR. If they don't help you, talk to the government.

That isnt right at all. like the rest the guys said call human relations, or the labour board. or head office of the company your working for.
People work for the money because they need it to live off of. As employers they need to provide you with at least something to keep your head above water. At least an advance or something.
So not right. i hate when employers pull this shit on young people. get to the bottom of this right away kid!

Here's the pertinent stuff from the webpage
Quote:
Paydays and Payroll Records
All employees must be paid at least twice a month.

A pay period cannot be longer than 16 days.

All wages earned in a pay period must be paid within eight days after the end of the pay period.

Employees must receive a written or electronic pay statement (pay stub) each pay day that gives all details about hours worked, rate(s) of pay, earnings and deductions. Employers must keep payroll records for each employee for two years after employment ends.

An employee must be paid in full within 48 hours after the employer ends the employment, or within six days if the employee quits. This time is by the clock and the calendar - not business hours or business days
So yeah. Pay periods ending twice a month, at least, need to be paid within 8 days of the pay period ending... so that's a maximum of working for them 24 days without paying you (Just over 3 weeks) If you aren't exagerrating and it has been 5 weeks then they're in breach of that. Tell them this and if they still stonewall you take it to the govt.:

That's why you talk to your boss first. Just let them know that they are legally obliged to have paid you by now. The more you let your rights get trampled and keep silent about it, the more they're going to think that behaviour like that is appropriate.

You can get a different job without a reference from them... How did you get that job?

it's not right and it's not legal, but you'd be surprised how many companies stall in paying their employees - I once had to wait 6 weeks for a paycheck at my last job.

The sad thing is most people put up with it because they don't want to burn bridges and/or they want to keep working at the company.

It's exactly shit like this (and much worse) that unions were devised - to protect worker's rights. It's too bad they got so corrupt in the past and have resulted in such a poor reputation that people can only see the bad in unions.

You haven't got paid yet?!?!? Girl that's ridiculous! Totally call them on it...what they're doing is illegal. As far as food and that goes, don't worry about it for the next little while...I got you covered...Same as bills...Just pay me back when you get some cash...But yea, call them on the paycheck...I will help you on your resume this weekend. :)

personally i never use resumes or references and i get jobs no prob.. i think its the way you sell yourself in the first place which makes an employer decide.. you want to convince them hiring you is in there best interest

i've been doing a lot of the hiring process at my company and nailing your interview is much more important than your references. Most applicants just put a "references available upon request" note in their resumes and it doesn't really affect our resume screening process

^really? i was told that a good resume should always provide atleast 3 work related references.

So anyways, I called payroll today and asked why i havent gotten paid yet and the lady said "Talk to your manager. You can't contact me directly, it's company policy." She was such a bitch to me! I guess she called my boss and told him I called there cuz he was also being an ass to me! When i asked to go for lunch he responded with "I guess ur entitled to one" and walked off. Argghhh tomorrow is my last day THANK GOD!
