I can usually hear my friends better than they can hear me. I pretty sure it has to do with the various saftey mechanisms your ear has to avoid damage. Once you've been exposed to high SPL for a while the muscles around the bones (hammer, stirrup ect) that move to stimulate the eardrum contract and don't move as much, which lowers sensitivity, and the cilia in your inner ear fill with blood, also to keep from moving as freely. Because I'm wearing earplugs my ears haven't been exposed to high SPL and are functioning normally. Also, while musicians/fitted earplugs are fairly flat in freq. response the extreme highs and lows are rolled off a little bit, and the human voice lies in the midrange, so that might help as well.
