Going Deaf
Well ever since i was a little kid, my right ear was noticeably (to me) weaker than my left. Now.., it just kicked into high gear. I had a cold, and I was still practicing DJing, and a few nights ago, i had an Intense ear pain, way worse than any ear infection I had ever experienced. All throughout the night i was hearing pops and crackles from that ear, and the most Intense low frequency noise ever. I thought it was a stereo or something, I checked the house, nothing was even on, not even the computer. I managed to get myself to sleep finally after 5 hours and a Tylenol three, all this was while I was having the pain. So basically i was hearing Pops and Crackles, Low Frequency noise and Intense ear pain at the same time. By the morning I noticed my right ear was considerably, like more than 25% gone. and my right ear sounded muffled. I thought it was because I was sick. I never did anything about it, and started telling people about it, and everyone said I should get a professional opinion. I went to the doctor yesterday, he said that While i had the cold, it weakened everything, even my hearing sensitivity, so when i was DJing, it damaged my ears. (The right one more because its my monitoring ear). That was my mistake I should not have DJ'ed while having the cold. So now my right ear is even worse, than the other day. I was in class, and could not even hear the girl that sits on the right side of me, talk, i kept saying what, huh, and stuff. So I dont know whats going to happen now. But some of the loss of hearing is to do with the cold, but for sure my ears are permanantly damaged. They could get worse, really fast too. I can hardly hear anything now out of my right ear. Now im even afraid of listning to my MP3 player in my right ear. But it still hasent hit me that im losing my hearing, like inside im just saying so what, but its gonna effect me for the rest of my life most probably. So all I can do now is just hope and pray that it dosen't get worse, and pray that the permanent damage is not too much.

If you plan to continue spinning at all, I recommend a good set of ear plugs (fitted if you can spare the $200). Also use them whenever exposed to noise for any longer period of time (parties, airplane, loud vehicles, etc.)... I don't know if it will help it get any better but it will definitely save you from further damage, as well as give you the 'illusion' that your hearing is better once you take em out..

what about the implanted hearing aids. they go in under your skin just behind your ears. i forget the name of them, but its an option if you ears ever get to a point of needing serious assistance. i dont think they work the same as hearing aides.

if it ever really starts getting bad... maybe by that time they will have invented a new way to fix hearing.. .like laser eye surgery, only with your ears
now that would be good maybe we should all start investing cause i know, how loud i listen to my headphones, where i work and all the parties i've been to, i'll be heading down that road pretty quick |

I'd personally give the ears a rest... hopfully its nothing permanent... You don't wanna get stuck with a hearing aid... trust me... I know because of personal experience... I can't hear certain high and low frequencies in my right ear.... As a result when I was a kid they did a whole shit load of testing with me and eventually they set me up with a hearing aid. I don't use it anymore... instead I use more of what I call a "center" of hearing... The reason why I don't wear it is not because people will try to look at me and judge me... but its the un-natural effect it gives off... With a hearing aid you have no control as to what you want to hear unlike the natural ear... Someone just tapping there fingers on a table on the other side of a room will drive one mad with a hearing aid because it just catches anything around you... and with wearing headphones...... forget about it..... especially when doing beatmatching... you just don't have the proper beat kick as you would an un aided ear. What would sound like a "Thud" only sounds like a tick.... When sound passes through your ear you got muscles both on the side of the head as well as aligning the ear canal that can stimulate or relax very quickly in order those properly hear those sound waves.... but when you have damage to your eardrum that muscle will not know what to do.... and even with a hearing aid the muscles will just stimulate and do fuck all. I don't care what type of hearing aid you may have.... the second you damage your ear then thats it...

thanx, ya ive been to the doctor, he said take it easy on the music for a while. but everyone is starting to notice now, cuz i really cant hear a lot out of my right ear. even when a car passes by on my right, i hear it mostly in my left ear. but im seriously considering the ear plugs.

its so bad though, i usually get up when i hear my phone, cuz my friend text messages me, and i also have an alarm clock going. but recently ive been getting late to class and stuff because i cant hear those things properly. today i was listning to my alarm clock to see how much i can hear, suprisingly its not piercing ear noise anymoer. its just muffled beeps. It sucks. I dont wanna give up DJing though. but i might have to do some comprimising, i havent practiced DJing for like almost 4 days now and its killing me. I listen to music, but at a low volume in my home stereo, but other than that when i do listen with earphones its only in my left ear and its very low volume.

I wear fitted ear plugs everytime I go out to a club, and have for a few years. I would definately recommend them. They sound a lot more natural than the foam ones, so I can still enjoy the music, and hear what people are saying. I wouldn't be able to do what I do for a living if my hearing was to go, so I'm very protective of it. |
