FeelGood is a jewel in the roughFeelGood is a jewel in the roughFeelGood is a jewel in the rough
well i think it's time

for the past several months i've been really thinking about what my career options are, and to be honest with each day im wasting away slowly and slowly i think its time for me to get myself an education.

i've always been clueless as to what i wanted to do with my life, but i think i've finally figured out what my passion is and what career i want to persue.

im turning the big 21 on the 5th of may, and i feel as if my life is going nowhere and each day im only getting older and older. i've always put off going to school because i've always been at home trying to support my mom and working full time, because due to heath reasons she cannot work. she has given me the a-okay to go abouts what i need to get done as she agrees i need to get the ball rolling and take the next big step in my life.

i've always had a thing for music. it's what keeps me going day to day, it's what makes me want to get up the next day, it's my life, it's just my thing, always has been.

moving along, i've really had a good ear to all different types of music and i've always had a very very creative side to me, thanks mom and with my dad's influence on me, he has given me a good business understanding.

to be honest i haven't checked out any courses yet, i just have a general idea of what i want to do with my life and that's anything along the lines of producing tracks.

i just want to get some feedback from others on here , what's it really like, what courses/schools should i look at, is it worth my time if im very serious about doing this? money is not really a big concern because my dad has offered to pay for a very good chunk of my education.

any feedback would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Digital Over will become famous soon enough
Ya I could help ya out....Id say first and foremost...learn Reason....its a great program to start the beginning learning process of audio production. I use to teach Reason at a post secondary institution, so I can show you some interesting approaches towards sound engineering, creating sounds, sequencing, mastering etc, from there I'd go to up E-magic's Logic Audio. That's what I use for all of my projects....great program. We'll talk

being an audio engineer doesn't always necessarily producing tracks.... I mean really you can end up sitting in a studio doing mastering and such for movie's and such.

no I am not making it sound like a bad thing. i am just pointing the potential that being an audio engineer can make more money working for a movie production group then doing mastering for artist's tracks

If you've never done any producing , then it seems kinda silly to sign up for a $12G a year program at an art school. You have to get some programs and equipment and see if you actually are talented/passionate enough to make it in that business. You are better off just practicing on your own time for a few years and gettin private tutorials with a dude who's been through the school stuff you know? Its the type of thing where you don't just get handed a job cause you have skills. You have to make it on your own.

I thought about the school route, but figured I can learn all the same skills on my own with online tutorials , help sections and other talented people

yeh i would tend to agree with goodflow here, i went to AI and theres a lot of people really hardcore into music but also a lot of dreamers. So definately make sure this is what you want to do. The admissions lady always brings up prospective kids up to me in AI to ask me questions and i think i scared a few, its very very tough, eventually they throw you into the tough mix situations and see if you can hack it (timed Pace exams 80percent or higher or you fail). One of my last studio classes there was only 2 of us left. So that goes to how you learn best, i need to be thrown into pressure situations and deadlines to work really well. If your really serious then the teachers will know that and appreciate that and things will go smooth. Other schools may not be as tough with grades as AI is a private school but im sure their courses run the same kinda way. Bottom line be 110 percent sure its what you want to do.

be prepared to spend years in school then get out of school and have to work for free in a studio. Hard industry but if you make it, fuck way to go!
Totally listen to the people writing above me, you should learn reason first. I have looked it over, and wow! I don't know where to start.

Very true.

My boy George just finished his school at CDIS for audio engineering, audio reinforcement, you name it... He went to school for 3 years and now he's working at Telus doing CS... granted he's gotten some gigs teaching audio software (privately) he still has the opportunity to make it a career... just don't execpt a job in that field right away.

same with my boyfriend Matty and a few other people I know the took his course. But Matty knows alot, he can set up any sound system and makes wicked beats at home.. but doesn't really pay off financially.
