Hm. In repsonse to all that stuff about SSRIs...
I was on Paxil when I was 17. I was suffering hideous panic attacks and some very disturbing mood swings. (I have my suspicions now that long-term ecstasy abuse was a major cause, but that's not the point) Paxil was the first thing that helped me. The panic attacks disappeared within a couple months and for the first time I could remember I had a middle ground, mood-wise. Most of my life I had been insanely happy or hopelessly depressed...and it was making me emotionally exhausted. It was an incredible revelation to just feel ok most of the time. I seriously don't think I would have survived if it wasn't for Paxil. It made such a difference in my life...in a positive way. As far as withdrawals...I didn't notice any. I was on it for a year, and then I took a lowered dose for a couple months and then i stopped. I barely noticed a difference at all when i went off it. I reckon it levelled me out and gave me a level playing field on which to deal with myself. I'm so glad my doctor prescribed it to me. I realize certain drugs are not right for everyone, but I just wanted to share a positive story, cus I dont think all psychiatric medications are the devil-drugs you guys are making them out to be. |

people need to deal with life on lifes terms there is nothing better the being clean, and who says u need to be happy all the time
emotions are emotions have inner strength be strong. prozzac(i guess u work for them) if u went to a phychiatrist or a therapist i bet u it would have made u a stronger person other then numbing it. Im not talking i tried your way and i tried the natural way and yeah it was harder for the first month but after that it was a million times better. If u took it cuz of drugs then u should have just waited cuz the body has the ability to heal itself. i Last edited by Ray!; May 03, 06 at 11:37 AM. |

the theory behind alot of these drugs is that they're supposed to calm you down and allow you to think clearly so that you can deal with your problems in a rational way.
makes sense, but doesn't usualy go that way. my mom however, is doing GREAT. |

Work for them? Just because I shared a story about how medication helped me? I wasn't selling it to anyone, I was just pointing out that these drugs were invented for a reason and some people have found them helpful. You clearly don't understand how SSRIs work. It didn't "numb" anything...it just balanced out my brain chemicals enough for me to be able to deal with my other mental/emotional problems without riding the mental merry-go-round that is a mood disorder. It was a basis for me to be able to talk to someone, sort through my feelings, and deal with things without suffering panic attacks twice a day. Drugs alone are never the answer for these sorts of problems. |

I started having anxiety attacks seemingly out of nowhere about 3 years ago. At first, since I didnt know what the hell was wrong with me, they would happen all the time, I guess because i was stressing out no knowing what they were or when they were going to happen.
Once diagnosed, I realized that it was all in my head. Whenever I would feel one coming on i would go to a quiet room and concentrate on my breathing, and relax. Almost meditate really. I still kind of get them, but never a full on attack anymore... As soon as i feel them coming on , i just tell myself its all in my head, and that there is nothing wrong... then i snap out of it and its alllll good. They tried to prescribe me drugs, but i really dont agree with any medication unless it is extremely nessecary, my parents put me on ritalin when i was 12 and ater i found out that is its basically pharmaceutical grade meth, i refused to take that shit anymore. I do agree however, that there are some people that need these medications and that is alright. I just think doctors dole them out when they really dont need to. A lot of people forget the power of their mind over their body. It can be suprising how much control you can have if you believe you do. Mind over matter bitches!!! MAUAAHAHAHA! |

I think it boils down to what you are comfortable with. I personally believe that staying away from people who may have mental illness is selling yourself short, and can be discriminatory in some occasions, but we all have the right to feel safe and secure too, so its a thin line.
I deal with several minor health issues, and i would like to think that if i girl was digging on me, but was hesitant, she would atleast chill with me first before making any decision. I personally think that some of the sexiest/awesome/intelligent/creative women i have ever had the pleasure of dating/fucking/having a relationship with had a mental health issue of some kind. I am a firm believer that many mental health issues have some basis in a level of empathy that far exceeds the respective persons capacity to handle, in turn effecting a persons ability to cope with specific happenings in life. But to me, someone who has some mental health issue/s is just someone who has experience with personal struggle, discrimination and empathy and is more likely to be emotionally seasoned, tough but sensitive, creative and loving. All traits i respect and look for in a women. shak |
