Read it and you'll understand that: 1. We have nothing against the male gender 2. Guys can come if they wear a skirt 3. The reason why it's girls only is to make a comfortable environment for the girls during the lesson. So they can feel free to ask any kind of question without feeling stupid. |

I would recommend reading our media release as well as our interview in Off Centre magazine. Should you have any further questions, kindly contact me via email at jenngoulet at gmail dot com or at my work today at 250 762 7050 and I will be happy to discuss (in a private manner) any of your concerns that you may have with the direction of our collective. In the meanwhile, we would appreciate keeping you thoughtless and negative comments to other threads. If anyone has any constructive feedback, we are interested in hearing what you have to say. As you may or may not be aware, we live in Kelowna and our scene may operate very differently from the scene in your locality. Our collective is successful and both Manda and I are very excited about the direction it is taking. We are very proud of our members and their contributions. Our crew includes 2 men at the moment. One is our techinican/website designer/flyer designer and the other is our guest instructor specializing in Hip Hop & straching. We have scheduled an Open Dex session for the end of January for all bedroom DJs (of any gender). This has not been posted in this thread as it was not relevant until today. Thank you. |

Wow cause i care what a retard thinks about me.
I honestly dont see a stupid question some noob asking about djing. Unless ofcourse its a question like "what is a turntable?" What's the point of even starting an all female group? Just so girls can feel comfortable asking stupid questions? is that it!? that's the only reason you stated above.. the other 2 were not needed and none of them gave me a decent reason as to why there's another all female dj union.. |

This is the same attitude that causes a collective like this to be necessary. Over the last 9 years I have been met with so much attitude, hostility, sexual innuendo/accusation and discrimination as a female DJ. For every accomplishment I achieved, there was a really shitty attitude from a lot of my male peers. When I first started getting international bookings, "wow, it sure must make it easy being a girl..". When I got a really, really good booking, "she must have slept with the promoter". When my record first came out, I think there were 2 local guys (Wood and Psidream) who congratulated and encouraged me for it; among the rest there were insinuations that I must have slept with someone really good this time!
A lot of girls would love to be DJs, producers, MCs... but are scared or turned off by the attitude they encounter. As an MC I constantly had the mic grabbed away from me during sets that I had been booked to MC at, and the other person had not. As a producer you see someone like Queensyze getting not enough respect in her own hometown from the local 'boys' even though she is producing with the likes of Panacea. I remember going into Futuristic Flavour, giving them my ID to get a needle so I could listen to records, and having them condescendingly ask if I needed help putting it on the turntable. Still when I come to a new venue carrying records, I get asked if I'm the DJ's girlfriend, because nobody would ever just assume that a girl carrying records is the DJ! When I founded Reverse Crew with several other women, we were across the map. Some of us were strong and experienced, and wanting to encourage more women to follow their artistic passions; others had become accustomed to sitting quietly on the sidelines in the electronic music scene the way a housewife in the 1800s would do. Others were too scared shitless to even promote themselves the way they should. Through our collective we helped each other through the adversity and came out better for it. Even still, I watched at events this summer where those of us who were booked a timeslot were bullied off the decks by guys "just wanting to drop a few tunes" before they got more than 15 minutes into their set. The girl bullied off the decks was someone who had been a die-hard, dedicated supporter of Vancouver's drum n bass weeklies since their inception. I have noticed the lack of male locals turning up to support OUR events, even though us girls have, for years, been supporting theirs. Yes, you can argue, there are a few gigs here and there where being a girl is sort of an advantage. Promoters will look for a "girl DJ" as a novelty act, as a piece of sex to sell their event - rarely as an extremely talented DJ. People come to the show expecting the female DJ to suck, and unfortunately there are a few women, desperate for success, who have decided to go along with it and exploit their appearance without developing their DJ skills. When a male DJ screws up, the reaction is "Wow, that DJ sucked." When a female DJ screws up, the reaction is "Girl DJs, they really suck." With this kind of experience in a so-called "urban centre" like Vancouver, I can only imagine the adversity that women in smaller scenes must face. I think Amanda and Jenn are doing a wonderful thing - a thing not meant to exclude the opposite gender or to fetishize their own but to support and encourage their peers to try for what they want in a safe and supportive environment. I'd like to thank the many male supporters that we DO have, and I only hope that our scene will continue to progress and evolve to a point where the gender of a DJ is irrelevant. But the reality is that it's not irrelevant, so until then, collectives like Reverse, FlyDJs, SisterSF, Hardstep Sistaz, Junglistic Sistaz, and many more exist to try and right the balance. |

I invite you to address your shit slinging with me directly via the email address or telephone number listed above. I look forward to hearing from you. Otherwise, take it elswhere. Thank you. |

Actually,
Ill summed up all reasons why there is female dj unions.. She's deffinitely one of the best females to ever grace the decks (and I have been saying that for years, not just in this post) and on top of that, throwing in her own vocals on top of instrumental dnb. Thanks ill for giving me excellent answers and opening up my eyes. Oh and I'll see ya tonight.. I think im working at honey :) |

shouldnt there..
shouldnt there be a union for ALL djs? Not just female ones? It makes sense and like any trade organization there could be free contract templates ( with little stupid clauses like " 1 fucking moniter speakers ") and maybe a pay scale... I could envision the newbs taking this to heart and applying the dj union logic like a teamster (" look I aint touching that until the union rep gets here. I'm on break.") I mean, of course the people making tons of money (if you can call it that nowadays hehehe) dont really want that to happen. . . plus there is too many of you god damn djs anyways...

power to the sweet ladies
pcock, Support should not always require understanding. Either support or provide constructive critism, and suddenly you will notice that people might actually pay attention to you and what you have to say...otherwise STFU. Last edited by manousos; Nov 10, 05 at 03:29 PM. |

Let's play records and I'd love to have you at an upcoming event, not just as a DJ but in all your painting-photography-dancing goodness. You're the one afraid of girls.. lol ;) But you know me now, and you know I'm not like that. |

I will see you tonight, and you're welcome to tell me that I kick many people's asses on the decks, male or female ;P. If there is public interest to see me speaking more on the subject, in a CTV nationally broadcast documentary special on women in the entertainment industry, also featuring interviews with Denise Benson, Shirley Manson, Britney Spears and Kittie, I could be persuaded to rip the video to a DivX file, or just lend it out. =) *The best worst opening sentence to a story.
