guitar....for those of you who play
OK, ive played guitar both acoustic and electric for about three years now. (by ear) playing classics like blackbird by the beatles and the wicked guitar riffs like mastor of puppets' etc.
My problem is the complex issues i have with guitar books and insanley hard tabs. How the HELL do you people read it. Every single music teacher i've had tried to teach me how to read music.I cant...i am un able in everyway. So those of you that play guitar fuckers its time to reveal your secrets. arg |

ok its simple reading notes is a bit harder cuz u gotta start out simple and move up, but with TAB, it just tells u what finger to put on what string.... it'll be like
___1____ ___2____ ________ ________ ________ so u put ur fingers on fret 1 and fret 2 on strings 1 and 2... pretty straight forward... at least thats how i think it goes cuz i haven't red tab in awhile and im extremely drunk... but anyway i played guitar for 8 years, and with tab... it shows u exactly where to put ur fingers... so u take one bar, figure out what to do for ... learn and practice that 1 bar, then move on to the next... then go threw it all a again, and again and again till u memorize it, then practice the whole thing threw if u get stuck look at the sheet to remind u, then eventually u got the whole peace memorized, then its all about practicing it to perfect it.... |

master of puppets is one of the greatest riffs ever. The problem with tabs is that you often get no real sense of timing which really makes learn hard songs even harder. Listen to the song you're trying to learn and follow no1d's advise on reading the tabs

^^ bang the hell out of it yoko. just do it. your fingers will figure it out soon enough.
i've been playing for too long now, and the way i learned to read tab was to have the song playing as i read the tab... have your cd player sitting next to you or sit at your comp with a media player. play... stop, rewind. play... stop, rewind. keep going until you can place each note you're hearing along with the tab as it goes. once you've got it in your head start trying to play the song to the tab without the music going. after a while you'll be able to associate visual cues with the sounds they're supposed to make. |

Tab is easy to learn but when you don't know the song your fucked. Because there is no timing in tablature.
The best way I could think of for reading real sheet music is to pick up a horn. no joke because it will give you a base to learn from. the only reason I know how to Play sheet on guitar I would say because I played the Clarinet in high school. You've been playing for three years but do you know the basics. You know....names of strings...names of the frets A, a sharp, B, C, C sharp and so on? Once you know this and then encorporate it into the sheet music it just takes time but if you PRACTICE then it will work. When people pick up guitar they think...Kool Lets play some Nirvana and never learn how the guitar is supposed to Work. Practice is not fun and you would rather learn some songs but..If you spend one month just learning cord and the names and Theory and Tempo and sheet music and scales....You will have more fun when you decide you want to play. Practice is not fun but the pay off is great forget the music and learn about the guitar. |

Everyone is capable of learning anything they want.
Your just lazy, if you really wanted to learn theory you would. I learnt it when I was like 10 man, if a 10 year old can get it, you can. Tab is bloody easy, but like mentioned above it's a joke because you have to know the song. But with anything, if you don;'t got the groove, don't pick that guitar up! Who cares about playing other people's music, thats what CD's/vinyl are for. Make your own stuff up :). |

There are some great songs to learn to play on an acoustic though like Red hot chilli peppers - under the bridge... some old mettallica from the black albulm, old 70s stuff, spanish classical acoustic pieces using fingerpicking instead of a pick... now that is fun... once u get the groove u can make ur own songs, its fun... theory is a great help in becoming a pro though,

I bet your a wicked guitar player Rayeine so keep on it and you'll get it eventually. Obviously you know that tabs are for learning how to play someone elses song, while theory is ment for writting your own music. If you have any questions, besides giving secrets (which I have none) feel free to ask.
-jay :209: PS I've only been playing the Guitar for about 2 years, but I've been studying music for 10 years now. Last edited by Jrock; Sep 14, 03 at 02:15 AM. |
