Saturday, September 1, 2007 An Evening with… ANDY C Ram Records  The man mysteriously known to most as Andy C undoubtedly is one of the most important figures in drum'n'bass' evolution. He was there at the dawn of the '90s when drum'n'bass was still hardcore techno, honing his talents as a DJ. Then, in 1992, just as drum'n'bass was beginning to blossom, he formed Ram Records with Ant Miles. The label quickly became one of drum'n'bass' driving forces, releasing a plethora of 12" EPs featuring many of the genre's leading producers. As part of the duo Origin Unknown with Miles, Andy C produced one of Ram's many landmark tracks, "Valley of the Shadows." Released in 1993, the track quickly became not only an anthem but also a classic, being remixed and re-released repeatedly. Later in the '90s came more Origin Unknown tracks; in addition, Andy C joined forces with Shimon and Miles to form the much-celebrated supergroup Ram Trilogy. Throughout all his success, the man known to only a select few as Andy Clarke managed to remain for the most part anonymous and, as a result, considerably mythical -- an iconic figure within the insular and manic U.K. drum'n'bass scene -- known to even his fans as only Andy C. Last year saw Andy C reign supreme once more as he was crowned Best DJ by Drum & bass Arena for the 6th successive year; a record for the drum and bass industry. He was the highest drum and bass representative at DJs top 100 DJs Poll at number 28, and started the year getting the ultimate accolade from the bible of dance music Mixmag listing him in the top 10 of their Club lands Ultimate Power List. While running his label, signing new talents, producing and traveling across the globe to play some of the biggest clubs, Andy C is a busy man, and one of dance musics best ambassadors. GQ has always been a DJ's MC, seeing his role as a middle man between the DJ and the crowd rather than constantly demanding centre stage. His versatility is such that he has always been able to switch up to double time and tear down a rave, or keep the crowd bubbling to a liquid set. 'It's all about reading the crowd, and adapting your style.' This approach has meant that you are as likely to see GQ at One Nation alongside Hype as you are to see him with Goldie at a Metalheadz session. Consistency and adaptability have kept GQ at the top of the MC ranks for 15 years and has made him partner to pretty much all of the top flight DJs.
