(2008.07.01) Digital Soundboy Tour 08 @ The Plaza Club
JnB Productions teams up with Digital Soundboy to bring you
Canada Day 2008 Digital Soundboy Tour Featuring DJ Hype, Benga, Shy FX, DJ B.Traits, Wood n Soo, Stamina MC & MC Daddy Earl DJ Hype Essentially Hype is to drum and bass as Afrika Bambaata was to the development of hip-hop. Although his Ganja Records label and tracks released under his own name and with the Ganja Kru have helped, it's the 'DJ' at the front of Hype's name that has proved most important in raising his profile to the level of the Grooverider's, Goldie's, and LTJ Bukem's of Drum'n'Bass. A battle DJ of renown (he represented England in the 1989 DMCs), Hype had a history of electrifying deckwork before moving on from his reggae and hip-hop roots in the late '80s and latching onto house and hardcore. He was an early force on one of London's most influential pirate stations, Fantasy FM, and since then he's consistently topped bills on the international DJ circuit, landing awards for Best Male DJ and Best Radio DJ at the U.K.'s prestigious Hardcore Awards. He's also one of London's popular Kiss FM's biggest attractions and was the force behind Suburban Base's popular multi-volumed mixed compilation series, Drum and Bass Selection. Benga At age 14 this afro-haired producer went to his first club, Forward>> at London’s now defunct Velvet Rooms, the night widely acknowledged for founding the bassy UK garage hybrid, dubstep. Having put in years of graft, Benga, now age 21, is a leading light in the rising global dubstep movement alongside his childhood friend, Skream. At 15 he released his debut 12" "Skank/Dose" on one of dubstep’s founding imprints, Big Apple. For years Benga, alongside first Skream, then Loefah, Coki and Mala Digital Mystikz, built exclusive musical ammunition for DJ Hatcha. It was this material, aired by Hatcha alone at Forward>>, that propelled dubstep from UK garage offshoot to an innovative genre in its own right. After early mentoring by Arthur from Artwork, Benga, produced for grime MCs such as Crazy Titch and Ghetto, before concentrating his output on dubstep in 2005. Since then he’s had releases on electronic stables Planet Mu and Hotflush, self released his own CD and has become a well respected DJ, playing throughout Europe and Australia. His biggest tune yet, Co-produced with Coki, "Night" is a hit not just with the dubstep heads, but with all genres of electronic crowds. Now, all eyes are on Benga’s debut album for Tempa, entitled "Diary of an Afro Warrior” because it contains this summer’s largest anthems! Shy FX Shy FX crashed the British pop charts in mid-1994 with "Original Nuttah", one of the most infectious Ragga-Jungle anthems of all time and quickly became one of Jungle's most respected producers. Born in London, Andre Williams debuted on S.O.U.R. Records with two singles, "Gangsta Kid" and "Sound Of The Beast", in 1994. His third for the label, "Original Nuttah," perfectly epitomized Jungle's growing Ragga-Ruffneck style, with a light-speed rhythm track and rude-boy scatting from UK Apache. Shy FX started his own Ebony label soon after, releasing more classic Jungle tunes like "The Message" and "Wolf". His 1997 "Bambaata" was hailed as tune of the year. It was his collaborative work with T Power that had so far the biggest impact, mixing their highly credible brand of drum and bass with a strong pop sensibility to create "Shake Ur Body" in 2001 – released on EMI subsidiary Positiva – that made him a household name. It was followed by an album on FFRR "Set It Off" the following year. Shy FX decide to concentrate on a new Digital Soundboy venture in 2005, releasing a Shy FX and T Power album "Diary Of A Digital Soundboy", as well a providing a choice platform for promising young artists such as Benny Page, Visionary, B.Traits, and System. DJ B.Traits DJ B.Traits began making a name for herself in Vancouver, Canada in 2004 through her frequent dance floor assaults on unsuspecting clubs across the Pacific Northwest. At the age of only 21 she has played alongside DnB’s finest from all over North America and across Europe. After teaming up with MC Kay in 2005, the duo formed LTC (Ladies Take Control) and performed as part of DJ SS’ legendary Formation Records crew. 2006 and 2007 saw the duo embark on Formation’s World of Drum & Bass tour and more recently B.Traits has caught the attention of Shy FX and his Digital Soundboy camp, becoming the first official Digital Sound girl. Stamina MC Stamina MC is a Drum & Bass / Jungle MC who uses both MC and straight singing styles, without shouting. He began performing in 1994 and in 2000 he met DJ Marky, DJ Patife and XRS. Stamina has an amazing ability to MC to any style of music in any way. He is best known for the vocals he added to Barcelona and LK. MC Daddy Earl MC Daddy Earl started out over twenty years ago as part of the Heatwave Soundsystem along side dance music legends Shut Up And Dance and DJ Hype. Daddy Earl has had his vocals featured on Shut Up And Dances early nineties classic “Ten Pounds to get in” and the huge “Dubplate Killaz” track on Hype and Pascal’s Ganja label. From building soundsystems in the eighties to putting the “Hype Hype Hype “into DJ Hype, Daddy Earl has very much been a driving force behind the careers of DJ Hype and Shut Up And Dance. Wood n' Soo Wood & Soo are DJ's, producers & all around music enthusiasts from the West Coast of Canada. Specializing in 4-turntable mix sets surgically splicing and remixing tracks from countless genres on the fly, they’re certain that their mix sets will hook you in and not let you go! End???
Your kidding me.... The Vancouver scene has made its mark in the overall international dubstep community. The comments and love and appreciation of artists/producers and founding fathers of dubstep towards Vancouver has been more then BEYOND positive. Infact former dnb producer now dubstep producer "Martyn" actually made a track called "Vancouver" because of what he experienced when he came to this city... The track itself is turning alot of heads overall in the international community. The trend will not die... Benga will NOT disappoint. He is one of the founding fathers of dubstep and continue's to move it forward. Infact he and Skream are childhood friends. Your most likely going to hear his remix of "faithless - insomnia" and Caspa's remix of TC "Where's My Money" (which is fuckin huge). Both of these are strictly dubplates at the moment. He's overall a really nice guy to talk to as well.... very polite.... I had a good conversation when he was here touring with hatcha. |
