Timothy Wisdom - The Turntable Wizard

"Timothy eats records for breakfast"

DJ Name: Timothy Wisdom
Email:tim "at" timothywisdom "dot" c_o_m
Genre Of Music: Everything with a preference towards breakbeats and bits of turntablism
Affiliations: Tribal Harmonix, All Purpose, Perpetual Beat Machine, The Revolutionists
Homebase: VanCity, BC
Website: http:/www.timothywisdom.com

How long have you been a DJ?

Got my first set of turntables in 1991. I was 13.

What originally hooked you into the DJ artform?

I was into "rap" music before the term "hiphop" was being used. I remember being shocked when I first heard swearing in Ice-T's Rhyme Pays album. I was hooked. I saved up some money from a summer job and asked my Dad (who was on his way to New York) to buy me whatever it takes to make "rap music". He came back with two gemini turntables, a decent mixer (which I still have), a 4 second looper, a microphone and a Roland 505 drum machine. I raided his old record collection, made some loops, wrote some rhymes and produced original rap tapes for my buddies in high school. Grade 9 rap is so funny to listen to these days..."I'm so dope and you're so wack./I fucked yo bitch and gave her a heartattack."

What type of music do you specialise in?

I have records from all sorts of genres but I really like complicated beats and funky bass lines. Guess I'm sort of considered as a breaks and hiphop DJ but I've been known to toss in some jungle, techno, house, rock. Whatever it takes to get the peoples movin.

I really dig the art of DJing and like to put on performances. Beatmatching track after track isn't much fun anymore so I try to add turntablism and MCing to my sets. I think the visual aspect of DJing is highly underated and I'm inspired by DJs who are entertainers as well as track selectors. I just got a harmonica so perhaps that'll show up in one of my sets too.

What makes you a unique DJ?

I don't just beatmatch songs. I put on a total show! I combine the visual aspects of turntablism with the dopest selection of tracks from several genres to make performances out of DJing. I also freestyle and sing over tracks and get the crowd hyped up....cause otherwise, you may as well be listening to a mixed CD.

Where can we hear your music?

I have a few DJ sets online. You can check them here:
http://www.timothywisdom.com/media/audio/audio.php

If you're into hiphop, funk and b-boy breaks, listen to:
Back to the Bass Kicks

If you're into harder nu skool breaks and techno, listen to:
That Low Down Dirty Sound

I'm hoping to put some more sets up so check back if you dig what you hear.

What is your most expensive record?

I paid $60 for a shitty house record back in the hay-days of house. What a sucker. I've also paid loads for those old rare breaks records but I don't mind so much cause they're rare and will probably retain their value. Funny how I never play 'em though...just keep 'em all wrapped up in plastic and rub them on my nipples every now and then.

What is your most treasured record and why?

I've got a first edition of "I wish my brother George was here" by Del. It was pretty rare before they re-released it. I also have "thunderstruck" on a 12" single by AC/DC which is super hard to find cause the album came out right at the turning point for CDs and they didn't press too many vinyl copies. I found it in Barcelona and have never seen or heard of it in North America...actually that's not true. That dood, Krazy Bob, out in Langley, said he knew a guy that knew a guy that was selling it for like $80. Ah the rumors...

What events have you played at?

Well I rocked my bedroom last night...

Actually, I've been all over Canada and have dipped into the US and Europe. I've mostly been surfing the underground party scene and while in Vancouver, I pop up at almost all Tribal Harmonix events. I also DJ in a 7 piece live funk band called All Purpose. We're heading to Japan in 2005 so that'll be cool.

I was one of the first DJs in Newfoundland (yeah, that's right, I'm a Newfie) and I helped start the dance movement back there. I also did loads of club gigs and raves in Halifax and Ottawa in my university days. I've done OM parties in Ontario too.

Have you got any DJing horror stories?

When I got my first club gig, I was into epic progressive trance (i know - yuck). I had a fully planned out set and was super excited/nervous about playing for my largest audience. When I got to the club, there was some sort of mix-up and I was slated to play during a hiphop night. Not wanting to miss my golden opportunity, I went ahead with the set but it was definatly the wrong music for the crowd. Since then I've learned to be way more flexible with planned sets and always pack some hiphop cause you never know...

Are you a resident DJ, if so where?

I play at Babalong. I also do a thing with the Revolutionists (a turntable crew) once a month. We try to switch up the style of music cause we all have lots of records from all over the place so the Revolutionists only really have one genre: vinyl.

I used to have a residency at Club 23 and I've played at most of the major clubs around town.

Any other information?

I did a Master's Degree in designing new DJ technology. The result was a totally new turntable system I invented called D'Groove:

D'Groove is a digital turntable and works sort of like Finalscratch - some digital music on a computer plays back depending on how you move a record. The main difference is that, with D'Groove, the computer can control the turntable motor to produce force feedback effects and auto-scratching. It's also has a neat visual beatmatching aid: one revolution always plays back 4 beats (1 bar) and the red line (on the record above) indicates the current beat. When the red line is at 12 o'clock, you're at the beginning of a bar. This is great for juggling records as it normalizes all your songs and songs with the same tempo will spin at the same speed. Make sense?

D'Groove has tons more features that you won't find on current DJ systems. There's more info about D'Groove including a small video on my website:
