ill-esha (PH1, Agroculture, Reverse, Breakbeat Science)
DJ Name - ill-esha Email: [email protected] Contact: it's in the phone book =D Genre Of Music: Drum & Bass, Hip Hop, Downtempo, Oldskool Hardcore, 2step, Breaks, Dancehall, Funk Affiliations: PH1, Agroculture, Reverse Crew, Breakbeat Science RecordingsWebsite: www.ill-esha.com Links: see above! How long have you spinning the decks for? 7 years spinning & MCing, 1 year before that as purely an MC/vocalist, been producing 3 years and a musician ALL MY LIFE! What originally hooked you into the DJing scene? My friend Tyler Lewis and I were in high school, and he was just starting to spin. I started singing with him at parties just for fun, and then one day at an all-jungle event MC Neutrixx let me on the mic with Andy B and Conrad Black (who was then called Remedy) and I was totally hooked. Soon after that I decided I wanted to spin while MCing. What type of music do you specialise in? I am much better known for playing drum & bass; it was my original choice and when I was touring a lot, that's what I was playing. but lately, thanks to Wood and Soo, I've been getting more chances to play out my classic hip hop-funk-downtempo stuff! Most expensive vinyl that you have paid for? - how much was it? 75 bones for Foul Play - Music is the Key (Omni Trio remix) - yiiiikes! What is your most treasured record and why? My first released record! ("Social Skillz" - Datcyde feat. ill-esha, Breakbeat Science 2001) because it brings me back to being 19, full of wonder that my name was on a record. Actually, I'm still full of wonder. (It's better than being full of shit, right!?) What events have you played at? Lots to mention.. check my history for a rundown.. but locally I will say I've appeared at many events at many well known venues in this city including every club downtown, Plaza of Nations, Riverside Banquet Hall, Maritime Centre, and the Spanish Cultural Centre! And on the island tip, I've played at Hush and Eagles Hall many times. Some of my craziest shows? Headlining at a ketamine-drenched rave in Los Angeles with a bunch of tranceheads... MCing at a happy hardcore party in Salt Lake City... MCing at the DSCI4 label launch party in Miami... playing at giant afterhours clubs in NYC. What National / International clubnights have you played at? I've played at the Vinyl Syndicate nights and at the Guvernment in Toronto, Lush club in Edmonton, the Warehouse in Calgary, Collective Cabaret in Winnipeg, AROspace and Club FX in Seattle, Konkrete Jungle, Direct Drive and Camouflage among others in NYC, the Winter Music Conference in Miami, for the Nemcron Recordings crew in North Carolina, Space club in Philly, Sunday Sessions in DC, Ohm club in Portland... uh for more check the website.. Have you got any DJing horror stories? I kind of think of DJing as a grand game of Survivor: you get dropped off on the island with decks and mixer, all of which probably have problems; the sound system sucks or has something wrong with it, the needles are skipping, and the scaffolding is falling on you. Now SURVIVE! And not only survive, win the f'ing game and come out ahead! I mean, there are all kinds of times, I've played with computer speakers as monitors, with no monitors, I've been escorted to a room with no needles on the turntables... but I try and think of it as part of the fun! If you can still rock the crowd, it's not a horror story. A horror story, I think, is like when I saw a certain local pass right out in a G-hole while he was on the decks. Are you a resident DJ, if so where? No weeklies right now, but me and my girlies (the Reverse Crew) throw parties every two months or so.. looking to set up a new weekly or biweekly event sometime in the New Year! Any other information? Symmetrik and I have a live PA act going on right now called Metaphysics, it incorporates turntables, computers, effects processors, and live instrumentalists - we have a few shows already set in January and February. Stay tuned to my webpage for details. I have a new mix called Synchronicities that you can download here |

I had a pretty good kinship with a lot of the crews in NYC and was working on music and playing out there... a lot of WMC is just transplanted people from all over the US throwing parties..
I performed there twice.. once as an MC (it's a lot easier to get a slot on the mic than on the decks, cause nobody has to make room for you).. and the second time as a DJ, I was coming from a gig in New York so I had my records with me and people squeezed me in on the lineup. |
