Intresting how I mistakingly read monkey as money.
Im not sure if this is the same guy, but DJ's be ware. Myself and one other got scamed by a pub in Nelson. My appoligies if this is not the same person I delt with, however DJ's should be carful when dealing with promoters out of town... especialy ones who only have 4 posts and havnt been regesterd long. |

^ Basickly a simlar post was made. They were looking for DJ's that were intrested in playing in a pub in Nelson. We agreed apon that we would be given a % of the door sales (believeing it was promoted properly), gas paid for, and a place to stay the night.
Originaly we were supose to sighn a contract before we went up, but of corse something came up and that wasnt possible. However they stil beged us to come up and offered us some more. So we said fine... should be fun anyways. We get up there and were treated well with a place to stay. However we were disapointed as the night was not promoted enough like they said it would be. I over heard the owner saying they would give us a few free cases of beer since they did'nt do too well. Yet the promoter said he would give us enough money to pay for our gas, food, and maybe even the speeding ticket when he returned to Vancouver. We kept in touch for a week or so after still being promised the money. However before you know it neither the owner or promoter would return calls or emails. In the end the two of us must of spent $200+ out of our pockets to play for them and drive all the way there. Pluse the $135 speeding ticket becuase we rufused the last day and made other plans, but were beged to still come up as soon as possible. NOT EVEN A SINGLE FREE CASES OF BEER EITHER :( Last edited by Ree Fresh; Jan 10, 06 at 12:05 AM. |

Curiously enough I know le tigre is working up in Big White now... unsure if their relationship has continued this long but enough of a connection to make me not trust this post. I'm going to be at Big White the first weekend of February... I'll keep my mandeep'dar on. |

whoa dudes, so untrusting, but i spose if u have been stung before eh.
Im not doing this to make money, I am from Sydney Australia, and am fkn sick of the music being played at sams every night with that same shit dj, with the exact same set list EVERY night pretty much, i want some decent music on the mountain, even if its only one night every so often. DJ's would be paid a flat rate for the night/set whatever (paid up front), u could stay at my place, and depending how far you live would depend if its worth it for you to come. Basically i just wanna party eh. Im not looking for some big budget dj who wants the world to play at a party, as long as you can mix, and have the records we'll have a good night. Ive just found out that apparently no one in BC has a licence after 1am, which is a bit crappy, but im sure we could probably sweet talk the management of the venue to stay open till 2 or so. Because of this, im thinking perhaps doing instead of a mix up night, perhaps a series of nights with a different genre each night. DnB, Breaks, House, Trance, whatever. Like i said, im not in it to make money, the cover charge would be just enough to cover the DJ and cost of equipment to hire. SO yeah, if someone wants to do it, basically a free place to stay for a couple of nights, would be good if u wanna check out big white if u havnt before. good to hear opinions shared anyways, its good to know whats gone on other places before i set things in place. |

haha we contacted that guy too but turned it down after we got more information.. you shouldnt have taken the gig rhiannon!
"The bar is called the Royal, it fits about 200-250 ppl We have a band room, with sleeping arrangments. The bar also has a hostel on top that is fairly cheap if you have friends coming. As far as payment, yes the drinks will be paid for and depending on how packed we can get the place we may be able to pay for gas. You are welcome to come in, spin in the afternoon. The weather should be great so we could open up the patio. If you are interested i'd need all your info that you would want published for the flyers that will be handed out in nelson. Thanks, Sandy" sketch factor 1: IN NELSON sketch factor 2: a band room with sleeping arrangements.. uh awesome sketch factor 3: hostel upstairs.. probably worse sketch factor 4: "we MAY be able to pay for gas" sketch factor 5: playing in the afternoon |

wow.
Monkey is Marcello. He is rolling through Canada for a fews months and enjoying the fab snow up at Big White. The only thing he can be acused of is posting his harmless request on a board that does not fully reflect the Kelowna area Djs & promoters. The result? A grosely dispointing thread direction filled with false acusations based on weak coincidences and sour past experiences that are rather irrelevant. So quick to judge but not courteous enough to simply ask... It is January 2006 and I can attest that the business of DJing and event organizing in the Kelowna, Vernon, and Penticton areas is in a very healthy state much thanks to those hard working people making huge efforts at hosting reputable weekly events, quality club nights, and the occasional all-nite party. In any case, I certainly hope that my 40 post here on FnK qualifies me to be trustworthy to those involved in this discussion. And to further credit Marcello's efforts, the FlyDjs Collective, SpaceDub/The Dj Store, and the Liquidbeat communities (all based in Kelowna) are 100% supportive of this event. If you think someone might be bluffing, always offer a contract. It will never hurt your business as a Dj or as a promoter to do so. If there is any skepticism from anyone here who is hesitant to deal with a complete strange based in Kelowna/Vernon/Penticton regions lacking in FnK board history, feel free to contact me and I would be happy to tell you about the interior scene and answer any questions about who the (suposed) jackass promoters are and who the credible ones are. thanks for helping to clear that up JGirl, I can understand where the Van City DJs are coming from (and feel for their past experience -- been there myself), but this sounds like it has the potential to be a really fun rocker.
I spent a year in sydney, cape bretton (far east coast on the atlantic ocean) taking a rather expensive music-tech program .. and there was quite a small scene but when we partied it up, it was quite a blast really .. lots of good vibe flying all over the place, great people. i sent a message to Marcello expressing my interest and tellin him a lil about myself.... ball's in his court now :) good luck!! |

thanks Jenn.. i just couldnt be bothered with all this crap to keep trying to defend myself where i didnt really need to... You guys have been so helpful with everything and i appreciate it heaps :) thanks.
to all you Vancouver DJ's... ... i will be holding back on getting any people from so far away for any gigs until i know that it has worked well with locals eh. :) all of you who got in touch with me, i have kept your emails and messages, and when the time comes if all goes to plan i will be in touch.
