Console Wars!
Seriously, I guess it's a "smart marketing idea" for all of these amazing new consoles to come out in small numbers, but it's frustrating for all the rest of us that just want to buy one.
And when you think about it, this "smart marketing idea" is putting more money in the pockets of resellers who inflate the price of a wii or ps3 just because they can by hundreds of dollars instead of going to the manufacturer! I just want a wii, damnit. I'm sure even if they released a large number of these things so people could easily find one, they'd still be selling well. |

i hear ya.. i wanted/want a wii really badly too, and if i could get my hand on one i woulda bought one, but instead we just picked up a game cube on the weekend that will do the trick for the time being. still want a wii though... :(

Aww Bev, gamecube is good times, probably one of my all time favorite consoles! don't get me started on how animal crossing once ruined my life..haha
I think we should have a regent gamecube night sometime in the near future! I'll bring sonic the hedgehog! :) |

i want a wii cause it's also backwards compatable and i skipped the GC.
This "artificial shortage" is more on the ps3 side and that's more incompetance rather than any attempt at some stupid marketing hype. PS3 simply wasn't ready by nov and they pushed it out anyway since it would have been market suicide to lauch after xmas. Nintendo launched with some 500k units and shipped and sold over a million within the first month, so it's less creating a shortage and more that it's the new "it" item this xmas. There are *always* shortages everytime a new console gets launched - happened last year with the 360, happened in '01 with the xbox and gamecube, happened in '00 with the PS2, and happened in '99 with the Dreamcast and it's going to happen in 5 years when the next generation shows up. |

I got a GC when it came out and it wasn't nearly as much of a headache trying to find one, although nintendo released the wii in larger numbers, I definitely think that knowing the demand and time of year there could have been much more released. I know part of the reasons stores have not had any over the weekend is because they want people to come and shop at their stores this week as opposed to getting what they want over the weekend and not coming back.
It's sad, I'm contempating getting the bf an xbox 360 because 399 is a lot less expensive than the going price for someone reselling a wii. |

There's just only so many consoles a company can produce before their launch date - especially since much of this hardware is never really finished or ready until the nth hour (pretty much the case in the games industry across the board). And really the biggest reason is that the Wii is *the* gift to buy this year. Similar to tickle me elmo or the 360 last year or the ps2 6 years ago. Even the Ps3 doesn't really count since it had such ridiclously short supplies and it seemed that people were more interested in buying one to flip on Ebay than they were to play with the hot new shit like the wii...
