I dont believe that any language should be "Mandatory"
UNLESS you are running a business and deal with the public. I find it very frusterating to go into a business and the owner/employee(s) dont speak english. However, I do understand that English is the hardest language to learn and as someone who is trying to learn french and has tried and failed to learn german, spanish and hungarian..I realize how difficult it is. I think people come to Canada for a reason...and thats because we accept everyone. It doesnt matter what nationality you are, or the colour of your skin, or the language you speak..what matters is that you follow the law and respect our country and everyone in it. There are so many other ways to communicate. Speaking isnt even necessary. =D |

If you want to order food at a resteraunt or buy a lottery ticket at the 711..then you need some grasp on the english language. For sure. Its just not always necessary ;D I go to the laundrymat once a week..and the family is Korean. They barely speak english but are the greatest people. They have been taking english courses for the last 4 months and are trying their hardest..but are finding it very difficult. The husband always says "EH" and its freaking adorable! |

I know lots of Canadians who move to Japan, China, Thailand, etc. and really don't know a thing about the native language, they might grasp some basics, but they are still not fluent.
Honestly, it's great when people fail to differentiate between speaking the language and speaking it well, just because someone cannot speak it well does not mean they don't know the language. I'm going to bet that the majority of people who bitch about people moving here and 'not knowing the language' can't speak any language other than english fluently. But hey, let's start another 5 page thread about the topic because it has never been done before on here! |

I'm with Myra, huge diff between grasping the language speaking broken english to fluent english to not knowing a fucking thing. Personally I believe that if you go to another country you better learn the basics. I also believe our country takes stuff a little far. Why should I have to provide a translater for someone trying to get a drivers liscense, all I can say is that fool better know how to read street signs..

Let's just hope that this guy who doesn't speak English very well, or at all for that matter, doesn't get pulled over by a cop that can only speak English... |

Living in Italy really changed my perspective on language learning. I now have way more patience with people who don't speak the language very well. It's not like they aren't trying. It takes a long time to get a language right and it's very frustrating trying to communicate in that language when you have to slowly translate things in your mind.

it comes down to cultural differences in the end...
In my opinion, if you come to Canada, and want the same respect as any other immigrant, learn the language as they did... sure, the grammar may not be perfect, but if it is close to "fluent" I son't have a problem with that... It's everything else that bothers me. As multicultural as we are, everyone still knows English |

I think in general people should know some other type of language. Can help alot in many things whether if its traveling or even career wise. I see lots of jobs out here looking for people who speak german.... spanish... french...
I personally know 4 languages.... french and english is what I was born and brought up with, spanish (which is an absolute beautiful language) and a little bit of italian. I want to learn Arabic but haven't had the time to study it all that much.. |
