^ i don't have a car, and thus i am not incurring more cost on myself by lugging the tower in a taxi to somewhere that services dell products. otherwise, good idea, sherlock tiedye
ebbo - i've already sent in an e-mail, but i will call their support line. the only sucky thing is I WORK REGULAR BUSINESS HOURS! augh! things are so inconvenient, haha. it just makes the "yay" in having a new system a little bit less. :/ |

E-mail support is a joke. 99% of the time they just ask you to call in anyways, and nobody's really paying much attention to you. Get a CSR on the phone, because then they're accountable to the time they spend with you, as opposed to answering your question between levels of Bejeweled.

Chances are you're going to get an e-mail back either point out what Myles and rawb have already posted, or if you have Vista, specifically an email with a linked in doc from MS:
The system memory that is reported in the System Information dialog box in Windows Vista is less than you expect if 4 GB of RAM is installed |

phone support - meh, not so much. and yeah, myles, rawb, you guys are right. sorry for being such an idiot, okay? i wonder why they have to make this so confusing. ps thanks wishbone for actually providing details so that i can read up on it. + |

Better customer service, they're local. They probably would have even caught this problem before she bought the computer. 64bit systems starting at $260 There's also always NCIX. seriously, if you think big box OEMs are the only way to go you're destined the rest of your life to use shitty overpriced computers. You always get a better deal when dealing with human beings than with big corporations. |

pricing for a big box system isnt that much more expensive than building it yourself. their prices are getting very competitive due to the fact that people are learning they can build cheaper. besides, some people like to finance their $3000 system. |

Usually mom & pops will build you a system for less than it would cost to build the same system yourself, which means you're still getting an even better deal. Plus I hate hate hate HATE dealing with big-box warranty support. Either you're shipping it away (which means it'll take time) or you're passing it through a major retailer (which means it'll likely take time and a few headaches and callbacks to the company). Most mom-n-pop-shops will just replace the defective part if it's brought in within 30 days, no hassle. The exception back in the day used to be ATIC but they've really changed that act since everybody stopped going to them because of their piss-poor customer service (also been generally fixed, though their prices are nowhere near as much of a steal as they used to be).

my system was only 1300 and i got a quadcore 2.4 ghz 256 radeon ati graphics card, 22" HD monitor, 500 gb SATA hard drive, decent sound card.
i was just sick of using the laptop (not enough ram and not fast enough of a processor to handle the kind of stuff i like to do, adobe etc.) and i can't afford to plunk down the cash for the computer that i would want all at once, so i thought i would just order from dell which allows you to customize. as i noted before i don't have a car so delivery is essential... i don't really like ncix that much, i find them to be kind of a pain in the ass to deal with. it must be nice to be an elitist but some of us just like the easier way, plus i've heard good feedback from dell. my system runs awesome, its nice to be able to watch HD video, and to play in illustrator/photoshop at the same time without any problems whatsoever. |
