Grounds on which it’s okay to bash a promoter...
Grounds on which it’s okay to bash a promoter...
Let me rephrase that. On what grounds do YOU think it is necessary to inform other artists and agencies about a faulty promoter? Is it not paying the due amount? Or a supplying a faulty set up or not supplying what was requested? Forgetting to pick you up at the airport and showing up 5 hours late? Maybe it’s simply not having a $100.00 bar tab for the artists with an unlimited supply of energy –drinks. Or maybe the promoters that barely attempt to promote their parties leaving next to no attendance? And if all is verbal agreements, or online and not contractual should all be dismissed on both parts, regardless of DJ or Promoter prevous agreements? I'm interesting in knowing what you all think... Happy discussion! |

My opinion is that publicly bashing promoters (or any other people in your industry) is unprofessional no matter what the circumstance.
If you have a problem with them deal with them, but if your best retaliation is to run your mouth like a punk you kinda deserve what you get imo. |

Not having a proper contract done up or at least an email to the promoter confirming/summarizing all the noted details - fee, equipment, date of gig, set time, travel arrangements and so on is YOUR fault. |

Agreed. Private contact between djs and agencies would be the best way IMO.

If they dont meet the agreement and dishonor you out of neglect then you can openly let agencies know and write a blog/statment explaining what happened (dont bitch though). I wouldnt call someone out for the bar tab issue.
If the promoter is late picking you up the day of the event that is excuseable, there could be many unforseen things happening ect ect ect. 5 hours is neglect, at least he could have called you to hop in a cab to your hotel room and he would re emberse you for that. The bar tab and energy drink thing is a privalage and if theres next to zero attendance the promoter may be a couple 1000 dollars in debt and will be sweating because he has to live in a box next month. The promoter usually has nothing to do with drinks as he doesnt own the club (usually) And the faulty equipment thing - In your agreement make it clear that if you dont have so and so equipment and you are free to walk if you do not have the above said required equipment. Make it clear what tools you need and be detailed (Power bar, left and right monitor, tech 12s, needles ect ect.) |

The promoter bashing thread that pop up on sites like this from time to time are wildly entertaining, so it pains me to say this, but I don't think they're every justified.. or perhaps "necesary" is a better term.
If you have a particularly bad experience, inform people in the business who you respect and care about, privately. One or two stories like this from trusted sources will ensure a sweeping disregard for the subject and far less opportunity for them to continue ripping people off or being unprofessional. I've said it before, I'll say it again: Untrustworthy, underhanded people are punished for their deeds by the ripple effects of those same actions. Jumping on a public forum is more about venting rage and searching for a sympathetic ear than anything, and you just come off looking petty, even if people believe you. |

Its the most useless waste of time ever.
1. It makes you look irresponsible for not doing your proper paper work 2. There are way to many facebook groups, forums, blogs with a long list of "dodgy promoters" that no one has the time to keep up with your personal opinion 3. If they really are as bad as you think, they wont last very long anyways If some wants advice on a certain promoter, they can ask you privately. |

How did I miss this thread? Hard Attack, lol... good times, good times.
Anyway, bashing Ricky Orion on a public forum is fair game IMO. But that's different from attacking promoters who actually put in the work to put on a good show rather than people who go around insulting their audience and then pulling a money-grab run without actually letting the party happen. |
