Florida Breaks.

This stuff's been popular in Vancouver for the last 2.5 years. It's had its time. Over a year when it was really popular alongside hard house. Hard house died, but florida kept on going. Can we please move on to something else in this city!!!

The stuff is one of the most poorly made genre's out there. Cheesy sample's galour. Or crappy trance remixes like "punk." I dont hear anything new in it. Just re-hash's of a re-hash.

Why can't I hear some fingerlickin' style stuff played out? I almost never hear any of it. If i could hear just 1 little kraft kuts song everyonce in awhile it wouldnt kill anyone. Some future funk squad wouldnt hurt either.

I havent been back in van long but the only ppl i've heard so far that i've been liking playing breaks is czech, precise, and vinyl richie. Everyone else has been VERY mediocre.

Moral of the story...can we please come out of our musical hole in this city and get with the times?

The darker stuff is really good quality music, but its boring for the most part. Its too moody. Breaks should be fun and not take themselves too seriously.

is there a local dj that spins somewhat a krafty kuts style?
meaning switchovers from breaks - house - hip hop and still make the whole room jump during one single set?

u wanna know y its like that?

becuz the 3 u named; ryan, czech, and vinyl ritchie have been playing for numerous yrs.....alot of the other djs (myself included) started when florida was huge....therefore having florida sounding beats as our roots...and thats wat gets us off....i mean yeah i've moved on to more funky old skool'sh sounding stuff (atleast i think so, stop me if im wrong) but i still love hearing some cheesy florida trax.....even ryan played "white powder" @ play! and it set people off.....what i'm basically trying to say is that alot of the more experienced/older dj's have had more time to focus their style, where as the younger ones havent.....

nope....which is part of the reason it set people off, what's wrong with fresh florida stuff? well atleast fresh in van......

to be quite honest i think the reason alot of break dj's in van play shit, is becuz the "break heads" in van listen to shit......alot of people who say "i love breaks" or "breaks are the shit", really dont know what the hell they are talking about.....so pretty much allowing break dj's to play anything.......i mean u could prob play dj jean - the launch (breaks mix) and people would still love it.....just goes to show you that its not always the djs fault for having bad taste.....

yeah man i have to agree with you on that, its not just the dj's its the crowds too, im sure alot of the kids that call themselves break fiends are only really into the florida shit, which makes it hard for alot of dj's when they play out becasue they have to please the crowds if they ever want to get booked again...Aaron even you said that the crowds here have fairly outdated(many would say bad) tastes in breaks. i agree with you on that, also i feel it goes for alot of other genres of music, theres alot of people with pretty shitty tastes in music, and theres alot of dj's who are far overrated, except for house theres alot of good fucking house in this city. Also on the other side of the coin theres alot of very talented dj's who play good tunes that rarely get out of the bedroom.

Most of the commercial hip hop coming out right now makes me want to run for the nearest toilet to puke. Few exceptions like missy. '75 to 94ish was prime time.

Sean. Word up. Most ppl in Vancouver's musical tastes are out-dated. If you asked most "junglists" in vancouver they'd probably say that dieselboy is the messiah. This may be true for north america, but not globally. There's a dozen guys sitting in the uk who are better.

Now im going to rant about vancouver. I've already touched upon jungle and breaks. HOUSE. Its like foreign word at parties these days. I WANT SOME GOOD FUNKy SEXY DIRTY HOUSE PLAYED OUT!!! Play's house room was a joke. I heard 3 different songs in two hours (at least thats what it sounded like.) PROGRSSIVE IS NOT GOOD HOUSE. I know theres some good djs in van, but they usually play on the deeper tip. Antoine at simple was way too cheesy for me.

Trance. Its always cheesy so im not even going to talk about it.

I've already talked about breaks in this post.

Thats the four main genre's in the scene right now. There's fresh stuff out there, but few and far between. The music in van's been sitting in the back of the fridge for too long.

I disagree...Most people like tracks like that because thats all they here from the dj's who are spinning it......over and over again

However although change is great and much needed....a classic "played out" track thrown in from time to time brings back memories and hypes the crowd

People like to hear what they reconize and know....But not till they're sick of it

but isnt that sorta wat i was saying? basically that since the dj can get away with playing that track, he will, therefore not "pushing" him into something else/fresh/new.....meaning that the the samedj will play the same ol trax, same style due to the crowds response? maybe i understood u wrong.....?

I'd hate to think that because I started spinning when florida was huge that that's the style of breaks my sound is rooted in. Why would I want to come up as a dj spinning the same shit as 90% of the dj's in front of me. I've been spinning for under 2 years and florida is not what gets me off. It's not a matter of time and experience, it's matter of taste. That being said, you gotta play what people like, if you want to get booked, and Vancouver is sadly behind the times. As for finding dj's who play uk breaks, you just gotta look a little harder. There's a helluva lot more dj's playing uk breaks than the usual top 3.

if u read my post i said "alot" of the djs started when florida was huge, not all......and the point i was trying to make saying that is that alot (not all) break djs who started during that time, started becuz they wanted to play florida breaks.......but yes indeed there will always be people who have different tastes and will play different music...
