it really annoys me when a third of my english class is spent relearning the format of an essay

please!

this was taught in junior high

they even have a first-semester 1st year english class which drills it into your skull

i don't see how people can have so much trouble writing a fucking thesis statement

I know....but the reality is that a lot of people don't know how, and a lot of time the thesis' that people come up with are too broad and unfocused..... In my opinion it is too easy to get through highschool without learning how to correctly construct an essay unless you take IB/AP classes and get a really good teacher. Otherwise you're allowed to get away with very general thesis statements...and the false concept of the 5 paragraph essay is too heavily impounded into high school students' brains.

i personally have a really hard time writing essays.. and yes its been taught to me since grade 6. no matter what i have difficulties. differen't learning styles and different weaknesses.

I feel your pain. In my Classics 100 course, we've been spending the last couple of weeks in our tutorials and lectures going over the most basic aspect of the research essay, because apparently some students' term papers last term weren't up to par. I don't see why the entire class should be held back for the sake of a few people who never bothered to learn the appropriate techniques while in high school, there should be extra help classes or something to help the students who need it, rather than forcing the rest of us through hour after hour of stuff we learned in grade 8.

100-level courses = death, fucking requirements. =(

Writing an essay using the five paragraph method will most likely net you a grade somewhere between a C+ and an F in most university classes.

The key to writing an effective post secondary paper is to forget everything you learned in highschool.

uhh i still find that writing essays is a hard one. .I don't think that highschool really prepped me that much in writing strong essays...

highschool was too focused on the "structure" of an essay, that it didn't help me in writing good convincing essays..Essay structure isn't anything that's hard to grasp, but writing an interesting/well-written essay is.. a skill that you develop with practice.

expectations on essays weren't too high in highschool, so I came to the conclusion that my skills were adequate... But university proved me wrong.
