Parental surcharge

i was just wondering if anyone elses parents keep tabs on every cent the lend you!~?
i have to pay back every penny borrowed, unless it is on clothes.
but everything else, my mom writes on the calander, when and why i borrowed it, i am 18! this is my first year out of school and she says starting sept i am charged rent.
is this fair or are my parents just sharky people.

My mom is the same way.
Well it started when I started working, and stopped going to college. I have to pay rent (if you can call it that, $100/month).
and our fridge is full of post it notes of IOU's. lol

BUT. the 'rent' money that I give her, she told me she's putting it away in a savings account for me to help with a down payment when I decide to move out. I had no idea! Thats super cool. Go mom

Well you can't expect your parents to pay for everything do you? let alone.. you are 18.

My parents keep tabs on all the money they lend me.. and I pay it back.. or work it off.

but best yet... IMO.. if your in school your parents should just provide a roof over yer and food on the table.. you pay for everything else... even school if you have too.

but an easy way out.. is always to get a job... let alone it can make ya feel good about yerself and not feel like a mooch!

^^Well that should change things but unfortunatly most of the time it doesn't and we just gotta face the facts

My Mom charged me rent since I was 16 years old, at the time I didn't like that but it taught me that I have to keep making money to survive (or I'm out of the house) and nowdays I'm never late on the bills so I guess it taught me responsibilty

My parents rarely bought me anything or gave me the slightest bit of money (except for a roof over my head, food and non name brande clothes) I always had to work for it. Now I think I'm alot better off cause I learned to fend for myself at a young age =)

I think it depends on the what background the parents come from and what kind of beliefs on parenting they hold. I don't think there's a right or wrong way of doing things, it just depends on the parent.

But, if you're -borrowing- money from your parents, why wouldn't you expect to have to pay it back?

im in the opposite situation -- my parents are constantly borrowing money from me! they ahve been since i got my first job when i was 12, and they rarely if ever pay me back even though they say they will when they borrow it.. i'd say they owe me around $3000 at least by now (they just "borrowed" another $500 from me about a month ago) , and on top of that i've had to basically support myself since i was 12 with my parents only providing the roof over my head

^^^ same here - i make hella cash compared to my rents and they borrow all the time - but then i have cash to lend so i dont feel so bad
yeah its sucks when parents do silly things but the bottome line is they just wanna teach you how the real world works - you pay rent and you pay back every cent you borrow

I own a house and my parents ay me rent and borrow off of me and I keep track of it.

Whats the difference with it being the other way around.
I owe it to them for the first 17 years they supported me.

My parents stopped buying me anything the day I turned 16. I had to pay for everything myself including medical bills, school supplies and clothes. When I graduated from highschool they wanted me to start paying $250 for rent but I haven't had to pay any of it yet. Once I start working more I will have to pay them for what I have missed. It sux but it is still cheaper than living on my own, I can still eat their food and don't have to worry about other bills like the phone, hydro etc...

Calculate how much it costs to raise a baby to age 18.

I think it is called asking for a return on investment.

Well it is her house, why shouldn't it be her rules? Did you pay for the house? No, she worked her but off to buy it or pay the rent on it, and she's letting you live there when she doesn't have it.

$1500 for one semester isn't that bad. I wouldn't complain about them not paying either. Maybe your mom doesn't have the money to pay that much for tuition? She has other bills to pay too. I'd figure now that your old enough to work you can pay your own considering all she did for you in the past.

Exactly. Paying some rent, or buying your own shit isn't that bad. It's a good thing and it helps to prepare you for when you live on your own. If you're old enough to work and help out around the house in ways you couldn't when you were younger, then why shouldn't you?

My parents aren't paying my tuition. The closest I'll get is using there PLC to pay tuition, so what i pay back is with a lower interest rate and no time limits. But I'm still paying for it. They've done a helluva lot for me in my 18 years and in no way do I expect them to keep paying for everything, they aren't that rich.

:)
