Note to self: stay away from Chinese resaurants unless I want to get empegnated food. Or Hep C, or D, or X.. I know what you mean though;
A lot of restaurants dont take care of their kitchens... The lower end restaurants try to save food, so they break rules The higher end ones dont care (golf club restaurants) so they chuck all they want out and order new stuff... |

yeah, funny how those 'crazy' stories always happen to a 'friend'...*cough* Anyways. Not tipping is really tacky imo, if you can afford the luxury of drinking/eating out, taking a cab, getting a manicure, etc. then you can afford to shell out something small in appreciation for the service they have provided you (of course, if this was good service, horrible service is another story..) It's so bloody embarassing when I'm out with people who feel like they don't have to tip, and I usually have to end up shelling out more money to compensate for their clulessness (yeah! new word!). |

Tippings totally up to the customer. Its not their responsibility to pay you. its your employers. Canada is one of the few places in the world where people are expected to tip. In places like australia and europe, you actually get paid a good rate, so customers arent obliged to tip. Tipping is the cheap ass food and beverage industries way of getting away with exploiting young people.
You should be complaing to your employer about your minimum wage, not to the customer. |

missmyra: totally agree with the cheap friend syndrome. i have no prob throwing in a few extra bux, i just feel embarassed for them.
re: the pigeon story, i call total b.s. although i haven't had pigeon before, i know quail and other small birds have a very different texture than chicken. so i assume something quite similar would be in effect. also let's face it, if pigeon were a good facsimilie of chicken, the chinese would be eating pigeons way fuckin more. as a real dish, not some fake urban legend shit. |

^^^ he was dead serious about the story...it was like he heard it from someone else who heard it from some other guy..ect etc..it was him in the cab..and he told me after it happened...so ya....its not like "telephone" where the story gets all messed up after being told to 100 diff ppl....

it's brutal here. that's super shitty that you didn't get a good tip. and lazee-grrl. you too, that's just rude.
tips here are expected because as a server you HAVE to tip out front of house and kitchen staff. basically, if you don't get tips then you're LOSING MONEY THAT YOU'VE EARNED. it's a shitty system i suppose, but you can't just go complain to your boss. "i think i should get paid more and then not have to pay out to other staff members", because you're still going to get tips, and they do deserve the percentage they receive. suck it up and tip the man/woman! [disclaimer* i will only tip well if they deserve it. but from being involved in "industry" etc. i will always leave the min. which double the tax.] |

I work in the industry too, but I think that makes me less likely t tip, because I really notice the level of service. Sometimes I find servers to be completely appalling, so no tip for them. I never feel obligated to leave the "minimum" acceptable tip, but if you're pleasant and good at what you do I'll probably leave you two twenties on a $30 bill. (What's that, like 30%?)
