hey ff

it must be real nice to have your parents pay for your education and sit around all day calling people trolls online. I wish I could do that but some of us have to hustle on the streets all day just to get by. Just cuz I have a freakish appearance, smell and live under a bridge does not give you the right to call me a troll. FF, your mainstream ignorant mentality blows my mind.

(I'm glad I stopped to check this out before I hit the bong.) I have noticed that, unless most people are giving false birth dates, I am well above the average age of the average FnK user/poster. I've made lots of mistakes/bad decisions.(I'll probably make several more before my time is up.)
Reading through this thread has not given me any new info, nor has it provided any sort of profound insight. There are, however, some interesting, and valuable, comments provided by -ff-, Rhianna, and even BoB. (Although, much of what all of us are typing is replete w/ empty rhetoric.)

Allow me to share my experience/insights.

In 1996, I was a full-on coke junkie.( . . upwards of $150/day in coke/rocks . .) I was robbing people, homes, I even B&E'd my sisters apt. for her t.v.,vcr, cd's etc. Needless to say, I was w/o residence, and couldn't care less at the time. (one of my favorite spots to crash was Granville Ilse; never any fuzz.) I never panhandled, or asked people for any kind of 'handout.'Don't get me wrong. My choice to be a degenerate, scum-sucking, douche-bag criminal wasn't a better decision; and, most certainly was not righteous by any means.

Vancouver is the one place in this country that transients can 'survive' 12 mos of the year.(Rhianna pointed that out.) This is something I noticed in 1995 when I moved from the 'Peg. Even when I lived in TO, I didn't see what I see here on the steet. Being on UI at the time, I did some research. (F.Y.I.: this was BEFORE the coke.) I spent most of my days on the street talking to the "homeless" and finding out what makes them tick.

The first thing I discovered, is that most of the people on the street, particularly the young ones, aren't actually homeless.

They're simply bored, and disillusioned. And I don't blame them.

I, too, spent too long believing the 'illusion' that everyone wins. Everyone in western society: goes to school, graduates, gets married, has a house/kids/career . . . and then dies. You don't have to try, that's what everyone wants/gets. We now know this to be false. I've been clean (both crime and coke) since 1998. Yet here I sit, at 30, looking for work and w/o house/kids/career or even g/f, let alone wife.

Yes, it was me who made all the bad decisions for me. I accept that. I don't even mind that my 'bad decision making' would affect me permenantly. But, this "civilized society" of ours is supposed to allow a man to make ammends; yet, even after an induvidual does so, he/she is forever branded. The problem here lies in that people are (somewhat) forced into making more bad decisions.

The media has convinced us that the real value in human existence is materialistic. Power, fame and fortune are what EVERYBODY wants. (And if, for some reason, you should not desire these things, well, then you must be abnormal.) People on the street are no less susceptable to media gestalt. "We" are ingrained w/ the belief that power/fame/fortune are going to make "us" a more "likable, and desirable" person . . . and to achieve these 'by any means necessary.'

With this in mind, think of how many opportunites you have passed on that you regret. Couple this with the media influence(you're a nobody w/o power/fame/fortune.) Now factor in ignorance and frustration. These people mostly think that we either have so much more than they do; or, simply angry for having something they don't.

As for who's "fault" this situation is . . . it's all of our fault. Makes me think of a quote from a paper I wrote. (A lot of this is actually from that same paper.)

"Nobody is responsible for the things they do. They are ultimately held accountable for the things others have already done." - J.B. Roscoe
( . . that's why "we" are now trying to clean up the planet while all the '60's hippies are laywers and doctors and, even, cops! . . .)

I should finish by saying that I do not condone, or condemn, the homeless situation. I beleive that we, as a species, globally, need to address the actual "human condition" with a logical, rational and compassionate point of view.
My first thought . . . to clothe, feed and house every living human being.

Zing!

Well, now I certainly HAVE been shown! Insults from someone I've never met, AND has such small balls that they need to post under a fake account to do so!

Well, since you seem to know me so much better than I do, I'll have to concede this one to you, big guy. Rock on!

way to kick a girl when she's down. You should stop bickering with me and be studying for finals. I'm sure mommy and daddy will be disapointed if you get bad grades and waste all the money they're spending on your education

and look, I'm happy you're finally getting some pussy. Keep it up buddy. I wish you all the pussy in the world. If you want you can come and piss on me some time.

But could you lay off and let me have my own opinion. It's so funny how all these lefties are all about being open minded and thinking critically... until you say something they disagree with then they jump all over you. Would you run along and go do some e at the plaza and rave it up mainstreamer

I don't know if you've noticed, but the homeless problem is getting out of hand everywhere in the developed world . This suggests to me that there isnt some world wide fit of collective selfishness and bad decisionmaking. It points to a deeper, systematic problem.
Pointing the finger and blaming people who have had a harder life than you are capable of imagining (from your nice, middle class home that was thoughtfully provided for you by your parents - who likely paid for the internet you're using right now) is certainly not going to fix the problem.
I really enjoyed reading this . . . well said. My roommates are spoiled brats from W.Van. . . .brutal

I know dusk 2 dawn very well. Is the Gathering Place still operational? Haven't lived in the west end, nor have I done any volunteer work since 2000. Bliss, still curious to know your age & how you got into your current situation . . . do tell.

I didn't start this thread to start a debate as to why some people are homeless while other's are not, I started it to express my anger towards the guy that practically attacked me!
I feel bad for homeless people, saying otherwise would be lying. Regardless of how they got there, bottom line is - they have no home.
I do not give money, as I would rather give food, but like Rhianna said, muffin's don't buy drugs. It was the aggression that this guy displayed that pissed me off. It's guys like him that make us use words like "troll".

i think its a big problem when a person walks past a homeless person to go into expensive clothing stores to spend a hundred dollars on a tank top, then walk past the homeless person again and not give them i dime. I'm not going to talk down on anyone that does this, because i do it to, But the fact that the society is this materialistic, it just makes no sense. Why do these people have to sit on the filthy streets and beg for money, When the stores don't do anything but advertise and we voluntarily give them all our money.

Way to be...I've been working here for over a year and have SEEN the drug deals going down in front of my store. I've been harrassed multiple times by these dealers.

Maybe if you got off your parent's couch and came downtown once in a while you'd realize that the drug problem isn't confined to Main and Hastings.

And as for looking like Meg, *roffle*. Because that SO hurt.

FYI, in the context of fnk, a troll is someone who logs on and posts under a fake account.

oh shut up rich boy. You said what you said and you can't take it back. Too bad they don't offer degrees in back pedalling at UBC. You'd be able to pick on people online all day long and still graduate with honours.

I used to live at Richards and Smithe and walked aropund the area a lot. I've seen crack dealers at every corner on seymour from Smithe up to Hastings.

Vancouver is a hub of poverty. Where else can u survive a winter outside in Canada? Sadly there's not much i personally can do, other than vote for people who i feel will deal with the situation correctly or help out at a soup kitchen (which i do, sadly not on a weekly basis). But when i hear people bitch about how they are poor, do you think being poor makes u a better person?, i just want to slap them. U got dealt with a bad card!! My dad came to this country with shit all, definitly less than anyone on fnk, didn't have enough time to sit around on a computer and talk about bullshit(and when i think about it there were no computers then). But in any case if u work hard u can pull youself out of a rut, especially if u don't do drugs. But when some hobo comes into my back yard to find cans, i live in kits, i just want to fuck them up. Who the fuck do they think they are? ya i know they are poor doesn't mean they can have my shit. Some bum stole my skateboard off of my deck, always come for cans always leave with something else.

But honestly, has anyone here ever travelled? If u want to see poverty try going to africa. when i went to ethiopia i saw poverty!! u see kids/women/men who are broke AND THERE IS NO WELFARE they ain't got shit. and also there aren't any jobs..and i mean no jobs. everyone there always gets hooked up by family, someone's friend of a friend always lands the good jobs. but then you're thinking to yourself don't they send food with unicef? haha the food they sure those people u wouldn't even serve it to your horse as cattle feed.

Pretty much i've been ranting. but really people even the poorest individual here is a hell of a lot richer than most folks in the world. as for a funny story:after seeing Donald Glaude a homeless dude in a wheel chair attacked my budies car while we were in it. never seen 4 tough guys + me lol get scared so bad..we were coming down from a heavy trip.

im not trying to start an arguement but why do you think that people have to give their hard earned money to someone who didnt earn it?

people dont have to beg..there are other options, if they are able bodied they could work as a general labourer at a construction site and make 14 bucks an hour, which is alot mroe then welfare....and theres alot of demand for those types of positions.

its jsut some people rather do drugs then work...i admire those from shitty backgrounds who try and pull themselves out of it, and i beleive that they should get all the help they need, but im gonan be a heartless bastard to anyone who consistantly fucks up, or makes decisions that put them in those shitty situations.

besides giving a bum a few bucks inst gonna do jack shit for helping them..the only thing its gonan do is assuage your guilt....just be an asshole like me and not feel guilty.

I don't mind giving extra money (if I have it ) to homeless people if they are doing something - washing windows, performing, etc but if they are just sitting there staring me down then I just walk by.
