$400 for a Rio Karma, which is what I have. 20Gigs. (Ogg Vorbis Support, as well as FLAC... which are both biggies for me since most of my music is OGG and FLAC is just plain cool)
$450 for a 40G iRiver
And if you'd PLEASE CLICK THE GODDAMN LINK ALREADY
$220USD for a Neuros w/ 20G backpack. Connects over WiFi, open source firmware, OGG vorbis support, plays over radio bands so you can get your car stereo to play it without any wires. Backpacks so if you don't want moving parts, you can take the backpack off and huzzah. 128MB Flash mp3 player.
But that would require you to click a button to find out.
Seriously. Check it out. Stupid more features than the iPod and about half the price. Not to mention hard drive is upgradable (and since 9 times out of 10 the problem is either battery or hard drive when it breaks down...) so if they come out with a 40 or 60G backpack in the future, it'll only cost you an extra $100 or so. Not to mention, you could just buy a new laptop hd and put it in yourself.
It's a well priced machine that actually does give you what you pay for, and gives up esthetic and "clique status" for functionality. The open source firmware also allows for a stupidly customizable experience (not to mention sending cool new functions in so that the manufacturers can incorporate them, thus meaning your player just gets better over time).
Again. iPod is popular only because Apple has a fucking awesome marketing department. There are better products regarless of what the ignorant masses have voted on.
