gay 'pride' events
*in response to UBC's pride week*
okay, i understand the whole philosophy behind these events and parades and such...well, at the beginning they were there to promote a positive atmosphere for gay people and to show the general population that we were here and here to stay, and that we deserve and demand equal rights. also they were supposed to create a friendly atmosphere for gay youth and people that are still in the closet. i have major problems with this whole 'pride' thing now. it seems to reduce every gay person to the same level. i feel shredded of my individuality because i am now lumped together with all the rainbow totting, g-string wearing, fancy boys out there. sure, gay pride has pushed gay people into the spotlight, but is it the spotlight that we SHOULD be in? i don't think so. all it does now is promote the stereotype of a gay person and doesn't allow for much room to be different from that stereotype. what about people that don't want to be identified as leather wearing bears, or boy-toys in little booty shorts being led around on leashes? i don't want my sexuality to become my ENTIRE self...and that is what these people are promoting. they are allowing a persons sexuality to overshadow everything that he/she is in life. it sucks. i just want to be proud to be me, not proud to be gay. |

last year a lady in my class called myself and a coupe of other students homophobic because our heterosexual relationships offended her. makes sense? no.
my point? no matter what people are always going to try to tag some sort of stereotype on you. because i talked about my boyfriend, apparently she felt she couldnt talk about her girlfriend? im assuming that was the case. i've been assumed a lesbian because i wear baggy pants and go to art school, it doesnt bother me that its been assumed, it bothers me that people even make assumptions like that anymore. our society is completely distasteful, and jake, i truely hope your opinion and voice is heard over the numerous amounts of stupid people out there. |

the thing that bothers me to death is that if you try debating the issue with someone from the pride council at UBC...they just keep spouting shit about how it's all about equal rights and creating a positive atmosphere for gay people. which is pretty much the opposite of what 'pride' does now.
