makes sense.
he dosn't qualify for refugee status though. but if the judge really wanted to make a statement to bush about canadas views on his holy fucking war then granting him and his family refugee status into canada would be a good way to do it. |

you get a certain number of points for how much money you're bringing into the country, how much education you have, what job skills you have, if you already have relatives in the country (wich can help you integrate into the country a lot easier). the rest of the spots are for refugees you don't have to believe this, but i think it's the duty of every well developed nation to let in a certain number of people from this category each year you should check out more info on the subject |

Send the bugger home. He knowingly and voluntarily joined the US military. When you do that, you're most likely going to see action one way or another. He swore an oath to carry out the orders of the commander in chief, no matter how retarded that man may be. The fact of the matter is that he's breaking contract by dodging his dutiful service, and Canada should not and cannot be a haven for people like this.
What message would this send to our troops? Military discipline is what it is for a reason, and our country shouldn't be a way out for an ally's deserter. |

(edit: for Diva^) well something's fishy because I have friends in the UK that work in the pharmaceuticals industry who have tried to get into Canada for the last three years.
And yet I know people who are civil servants who tell me about "chain immigration" where the country takes on a 75 year old Indian man only to pay for his pension. Yes, that's only anecdotal but it does happen. Even if it's as fair as you've described, why are third world immigrants still vastly overly represented in terms of immigration... when it should be the other way around? |

As a person who used to work as an officer for Canada Immigration, this issue is a joke
I seriously can't cry for some US deserter worried about being jailed or facing a court martial because he doesn't believe in the war. America is still an arguably civilized country that doesn't inflict torture or danger to people's lives due to their beliefs and life choices. I'm sure that several groups in the US would help fund his plea and even finance extreme measures to ensure his safety like location/identity change. If you want to talk about Rwandan massacre survivor, an Palestinian insurgent or someone who is to be deported to Colombia or Honduras to get killed after they get off the plane, now we're talking. No one is saying that the Canadian immigration or refugee procedures are fair or even sufficient, but seriously... Crying about an able-bodied man afraid to return to an America is the least of Canada's refugee concerns. Buddy is able to go home and get in line, just like everyone else who wants to immigrate to Canada. Appeal to the minister even, just don't take up a spot for someone who is really in dire straits |

it was pointed out to you very clearly in this post http://www.fnk.ca/board/showpost.php...5&postcount=31 that immigration in canada as a whole is pretty evenly distributed with people from all parts of the world. for the second time, from statistics canada: Immigrant population by place of birth, by provinces and territories (2001 Census) http://www.statcan.ca/english/Pgdb/demo34a.htm everyone please check it out for yourself. also, from statistics canada: Population by selected ethnic origins, by provinces and territories (2001 Census) [counted by responses] http://www.statcan.ca/english/Pgdb/demo26a.htm |

What I'm talking about is CURRENT trends. Go to any urban center like Metrotown and it's pretty obvious you're surrounded by non-English speaking first generation immigrants from Asia. Can you think of any major gathering points for Western European immigrants? Of course not, that wouldn't be 'diverse' enough basically i'm saying there are too many chinese people |

^Um, I grew up in a suburb around here where just about everyone there was white. I never even saw an asian person until I was in elementary school, probably 8 years old.
And metrotown isn't an urban centre, are you thinking Burnaby? There's a lot of white people in Burnaby, you might realize that if you look kind of well, beyond the mall :P |

well, i grew up in nanaimo.
in my elementary years, i was 1 of 3 oriental persons in the school including my brother. from 8 to 12, i was 1 of maybe 4 or 5 oriental persons in the entire school. yet i never felt out of place amongst white folks. so it's somewhat of a disappointment to me when i see certain white people get all nervous when amongst orientals. if u look beyond color, there's really little difference. we're all just people. |
