teenage girls who steal
At my job its very commen for me to have to deal with teenage girls stealing clothes from my store. Usually its the most petiest stuff as well. Getting caught with $10 underwear, a $15 shirt, etc. Most of the time my staff is pretty aware of whats going on in the store, and the people who shop there, so when it comes to catching these girls, there pretty good at it.
Being said that, yesterday in the afternoon One of the girls who was working on changing rooms caught a girl trying to steal a $15 shirt, tags were off shirt was stuffed into her sleeve. At the time i was running the shift, so i went up to the girl and asked her if she could step into the back office, that she had been caught "trying" to steal from our store. I was very descreate about it, so i made sure i didnt make a scene for the girl. She agreed to come to the back...... BUT THEN SHE FUCKIN RAN LIKE HELL!!! Oh buddy did she RUN! So me and the girl who had caught her Ran after her. Not jus run, we sprinted after this girl. All of you who know Coquitlam centre pretty well, Off the wall is located on the top floor beside future shop and golf town. Well the little brat ran right through Golf town, as my friend and i are chasing after this girl, yelling "stop her, stop her" do you think any staff of golf town could do that, oh no they just stood there. Finally one big guy stepped infront of her and stopped her. Finally we got a hold of her, and pretty much dragged her into the store. The funny part was all of this was over a $15 shirt, that was an ugly piece of cloth with a bird on it! Come on, was it really worth it? After that i sat her down, called the cops and security. I talked to the officer, and since shes so young (16) and it was only over a $15 shirt, they wont press charges, theres just no point. So i thought great whatever, shes going to think she can get away with this. OH no the cop said. Ill make sure she never forgets this day. The cop went back there for a few minutes , brought her out in hand cuffs, went through the entire mall just to get down back to the police car, and brought her home to her parents. Shes now banned from Off the wall for life, and Coquitlam centre for just a year. ..like i said i'v never ran that fast in my life, i hope i dont have to run after another one.. |

Flip the script on yourself for a second. Your an 18 year old girl, working at some retail mall franchise that pulls in a heafty penny off clothers that offer far less to those who make it(regardless if its not in sweatshop conditions) You see a 16 year old girl, probably subject to the same pressures of right of passage that we all were. (im biased though, i was a major theif at that age as well) We are talking about shopliffting, not personal robbery. A somewhat victimless crime, but a girl that know no better.
Im not telling you, to let anyone to walk in, and loot the place blind, but this is a good time to investigate where you allegiances are to in life. Mind you, were talking about s 15$ shirt, not food, or appliances, or something that may help someone survive. As well, ive been living off value village for how long now, and with attentive shopping patterns and an ability to modify, i manage to come off half decent with a very small pricetag. As well this whole incident could be a product of the incessant need to look good, and keep up with the "jones" So now that i actaully think about, you should have slapped her, and said "snap out of it" your a suburban princess, go steal something when you need it to survive! Oh....I can believe it -- but I can't believe she ran over a $15 shirt...when she could have just taken it out ofher shirt and placed it back in the store (since she was in the store anyways...because she's not actually stealing it until she leaves the store). I've seen it way too often in retail too...just last week at the store I work at (Garage in Willowbrook) two 12 year olds and two 10 year olds came in the store with one of the 10 year olds in a shopping cart. Right away my manager was on then and they said she had hurt her ankle. Well, the entire time they were in the store, my manager was watching them and they put 3 tshirts in the cart and the girl in there it them under her. Smart kids...HAH. As soon as they left my manager called for security (we always have security close by because everything happens in our store...injuries, fainting, fights lol). These girls blamed it on one of the 10 year olds and none of them were remorseful except the 10 year old that they were blaming it on. She was crying. Can you believe it...10 years old! And did I mention it was about 8:30pm on a school night? Where were these kids parents?
Anyways, we didn't end up pressing charges either...but it would have been nice if they were a bit more remorseful for what they did. meh. but you see it every week. |

I like your thought process, fable. Very simliar to what I felt reading this. And I enjoyed your "keep up with 'jones'" remark. Hehe. |

On behalf of that girl, I'll say that I'm sorry.
When I was 15 I went through a phase of shoplifting with friends, and sure it didn't really harm anyone, but it is so annoying and aggrivating for the staff. Sounds like that girl learnt her lesson and won't be doing it again any time soon. |

That must be it.
Maybe not in her case but it isn't safe to chase shop lifters i was under the impression employees were told not to do that to just call security/cops so they could handle it. I know of one incident where a dumb employee at wal-mart tried to be a hero and chased a kid racking from there and he got stabbed for his troubles. So much for being the hero. |

you really really really shouldn't run after people who storm out.
I've worked at retails, and I always told people who worked at store to never do it either. frankley, it ain't worth it. cause for all they care, they could turn into an alley and take out a weapon on you. Or they could meet with a whole bunch of people just around the corner. it's really dangerous! think about it.. "Off the Wall" would never do the same for you. |

retail is a private business and you are legally allowed to do that if you think she's a harm to your business. but yea, you can't give her shit for it. she'd so win the court's ruling. |

I'm thinking most girls that age experience something similar, not matter what their values are or who they were raised by. Its just something that happens, for whatever reason, stupid, excitement, pressure to fit in? It happened to her and it happened to me.
15, sounds about right, had a bit of a shoplifting spree with a couple bad asses from highschool, mostly makeup and bras n stuff. Finally one day I decided to get something bigger. Fair enough it was still worth maybe 40 bucks, and yes i did get caught. Basically the same treatment from the cops, with the cuffs n shit, but the place was so close to where my mom worked that they called her down to pick me up. Haha... boy i definately will never forget that day. You know how your parents get so dissapointed in you they dont even talk to you. They dont get mad, they just get silent. OMG the worst feeling ever. To this day i wont even sample a grape in the produce market without paying for it. It definately taught me a lesson, as I am sure it does to most of them. My two cents. yea.. its more typical than you think it is. i went through that phase too, now i know how important it is to be around good and smart ppl. its crazy how materialistic and greedy you can get between 14-17.. our world is kinda fucked up.

The YCJA is a little too lenient. If she's not scared straight this time I hope she does something else so they can actually book her.
I think 60-70% of the younger shoppers at the mall are banned from it. I was 16 as well when I got caught. But I actually got arrested :( |
