Harper's Stance on Same-Sex Marriage

I was watching the news last night and in an interview with Stephen Harper yesterday he disclosed this:

"I'd rather hold a free vote on the outlaw of same-sex marraige sooner rather than later" (Not an exact quote, just the gist of it)

Now obviously he hasn't, or can't really, call this yet due to the fact that he's not sworn in until Feb 6th I believe, but WOW. Sure isn't going to take long for the CONS to try and lay down there religious right heavy handedness on the Canadian public!

Granted, even if he holds a free vote I doubt it will pass but still.... the fact that he's been Prime Minister Designate for all of 4 days and is already talking this sort of thing up just pisses me right off. Who the fuck does this guy think he is telling people what's right and wrong? Leave well enough alone and let people do what they want to do you pompous Jesus freak.

agreed! I have the feeling that he's gonna be doing a lot of things like this in the years to come... scary, but thats what happens when you elect a bible-thumping christian into power. :(

He's not telling people what's right and what is wrong. Just offering the MP's in the House of Commons a chance to vote on their own choice and not by their Party Lines.

Gimme a break Erik... the Canadian people are hardly demanding that a vote be taken on this. As well, it seems odd to me that 308 people, whom very likely, none of them gay, can vote on what gay people can or can't do. As far as I'm concerned that is as ridiculous as saying white people can't marry asian people.

Let people be. We hardly live in a country that is ruled entirely by the principles of the Christian religion so it can't seem right that we'd all be expected to live by them.

That may be true, but in a Country where everyone lives free to do what they will... personally I am for a Civil Union for Same-Sex Couples but would not mind seeing the sacrament of Marriage preserved. AAAAALSO... in the Jewish, Hindu and Sikh faiths they don't have Same-Sex Marriage so by trying to justify this as a Christian thing doesn't work. As far as I know, the only religion that even condones the homosexual relationship is Islam for they believe that the new prophet will be born of Man.

^The fact is this: We're a country of MANY faiths so we can't expect the general populace to live to the standards of any of them. On top of that.... who gave the Christians the right to the WORD marriage???

Religions need to realize that they aren't the be all and end all to society.

It is technically outlawed, but that doesn't stop men from enjoying each other's company, just so long as it's kept on a hush-hush basis.

Wow, sounds familiar...

This isn't about the sanctity of marriage though Erik.

This is about same sex couples having the same rights as hetero couples. My aunts have been together for 25 years, living together for most of those years, owning homes together, sharing their lives. Until a few years ago, they weren't recognized on eachothers benefits, or were allowed to receive pensions in the case of death. Why should they not have the same rights? They are in a loving, committed relationship.

Oh, and even if the vote goes through, it's not like the issue will be dropped. Libs will use it as a means to garner support for them again, blah blah, etc.

Personally, I'd rather the issue is done and out of the way early on so they can concentrate on other agendas in Parlaiment.

I don't see the real problem with a free vote.
All the Mp's will just push forward their will, it's what we elected them for isn't it? I wouldn't mind seeing more free votes on sensitive issues, it seems good for democracy.

sarcrament of marriage? you mean like allowing people to marry complete strangers on television a la the bachelor and who wants to marry a multi-millionaire...or maybe you mean las vegas and their elvis marriages? what about 'divorce court' where we all get to view the sacrament of marriage as it falls apart.

same-sex couples will not ruin the sacrament of marriage...it's already been ruined. let's just face what this is really about, which is homophobia. obviously these groups don't care a rats ass about the sanctity of marriage since they allow this other stuff to take place, but suddenly when a same-sex couple wants to marry it's all about saving marriage. give me a fucking break.

civil unions for same-sex couples falls under the 'seperate, but equal' category, which is still discrimination. what if we had a separate, but equal civil union for inter-racial marriages? it would be still be considered a racist practice because they are being separated from the rest of society; it doesn't matter if civil unions were exactly the same as marriages or not, since it's a separate institution it's still discriminatory.

free votes aren't such a bad idea, except for the fact that the canadian public has already been through this before with same-sex marriage. the courts ruled in favour of it, the charter of rights is in favour, the government ruled in favour...what the fuck more do they want then to push their narrowminded christian agenda?

But why are we going to waste all of these tax dollars on Harper trying to get support to further his religious agenda and join church and state when we could be doing something to, oh I don't know, advance the country out of the fifties? Instead, we're gonna get a tax break for the rich, repeal the tax breaks for the poor, increase military spending, and ban gays from Canada. Hooray.

I can't even beleive a vote on same sex marrage is possible!?!

I feel thats breaking the free out of a free country. It's not hurting anyone and is simply based on personal beleives. How can they when this country is so proud to have so many cultures unite as one, yet the first vote the public gets on the law in a long time is based on same sex marrage. WTF??? They could of at least started with a vote regardeing gun laws.
