nco needs to get bombed

so,thank god i called in sick to work yesterday or else my ass would prolly be in the hospital today.I work at NCO in surrey which got shut the fuck down by hazmat yesterday due to hazardous fumes leaking out of...well therye not exactly sure from where so ya. It was only my area that was affected, like 10 of my co workers wne to hospital yesterday because of light headedness, loss of vision, nausea, dizziness, and almost complete loss of motor skills. So fucking hazmat comes to work does some tests and ok`s it.So the afternoon+night shift people go back to work AND THE FUCKING FUMES START COMING AGAIN!!!!Another 4 of my coworkers go to hospital at like 6am this morning. So the stupid fucks that work for management air out the fucking place then get hazmat down again to retest and then again they say everythings fine. So I get to work today and find out all of this shit,go to some meeting in one of the caf`s and management stright up told us if you dont go to work you wont get paid. Which IMO is fucking garbage. Its like yeah okay guys,Im really going to risk in haling potentilly lethal fumes for 4+hrs until I start to feel the effects of it,and until you guys see enough sick employees that are unable to function before you shutter down AGAIN.Its like fuck off like Im going to trust what hazmat has to say if this is the second time theyve okay`d things in less then 24hrs and the same damn thing keeps happening. Not to mention this is the FOURTH TIME over recent months where people have been affected by hazardous fumes being inhaled in the work place.

I am just so fucking angry and upset that theyd even suggest that we go back to work before the 24 hr testing of the downstairs area was even complete. What makes me even more angry is that they move us to the upstairs area to work but yet the upstairs&downstairs area ARE ON THE SAME FUCKING VENTILLATION SYSTEM.Anyways,we just recently voted union so me and the other 17 or so coworkers that refused to go to work had a chat with our union rep and apparently what theyre doing is against the law.And also the fact that they did not have an evacuation procedure to execute certainly doesnt make matters any better for them.

But what really pisses me off is that they`ll get away with this BS just like every other major company does.Fuck Im so angry and apalled that, thier production levels comes first over thier employees health&safety.

I wonder if our works been evacuated again today, guess Ill just stay tuned to the idiot box.

That's harsh. It really pisses me off when employers have no regards what-so-ever for their employees health, that makes for angry workers and a very bad work environment. *shakes head*
Good to hear you've got a union rep to help you all deal with this.

shitty.... however questionable....
if hazmat thought it was a severe risk then they would shut down the whole site entirely and it would be against the law for the organization to open the facility. However if they deem that its safe then they can give the green light to the organization and they can do what every they want. Now whats really interesting is that I can understand the hazmat team giving a green light on maybe 1 or 2 individuals who came down with the symtoms but when have more people on 2 seperate incidents hazmat should of closed the facility... They have authority to do it....

On another hand when working in a call center environment.... they need to ensure that they have proper ventalation working at all times... Reason being.... Well depending on your office size and how many computers are always on 24/7 the computers generate heat which is cooled by a fan. Carbon monoxide will be generated from a computer simply because of the combination of materials that is being heated. So your standard case fan will probably throw 20-25 CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) of this shit in the air around you... now that combined again with all those computers running all the time... do the math.... And because the components involved with a computer that can create these fumes gets to such a high degree where its causing someone to feel sick you can only imagine what it can do to you health wise in the later future...

i seriously doubt it had anything at all to do with computers emitting carbon monoxide when a)you cant smell carbon monoxide and b)people could fucking smell fumes that left a metallic kind of laytex glove taste in thier mouths.

and our area is completely seperate from all of the other work areas in the building as requested by the client for security reasons. With that said,we have a completely seperate ventillation system then the rest of the center. Our area was the only affected area, and I think maybe 2 or three people from MSN were affected as MSN is right outside of the hallway to our work area, and when walking through the hallway you could smell the fumes. So yeah.

i used to work there in IT a while back. only thing I can think is that maybe the generator was leaking fuel or something. they're probably trying to kill you guys for signing on with the union.

the union cant really do much for us since we just voted them in and dont go to the bargaining table for another like 3 months or something. What bothers me even more is that the hazmat team wasnt able to identify what it was or where it was coming from, according to thier verbal report as given to us by management.I wonder what the written report will find if anything at all.

Im totally fucking sketched out to even set foot in there tomorrow,be it up or downstairs.

If you decide not to go to work after HAZMAT has declared it ok then ya you shouldn't expect to get paid, the only ones who should be compensated are the ones who became ill due to the stuff. Tough luck for you I suppose

I still wouldnt go in if i were you, even though money is important, you have more then just you to think of! The last thing you want is something to happen to you and the baby.
I cant believe how your work has been handaling it though, employees do need to be informed of whats going on.

this reminds me of a situation where this small child was exposed to hazardous fumes and the employer kept exposing the child to these fumes even though it was brought the there attention

if hazmat tested it twice and said its ok its very likely that its all in your heads, or soemthing unrelated to where you work. its liekly entirely psychological in its nature, this is a very common phenomena.

Uh, NCO was not shut down in any way, shape or form on Monday.

Hazmat was there but it was because a couple people reported feeling nauseous. NCO sent these people to the hospital and Hazmat was called as a precautionary measure. They didn't find anything that pointed to contamination.

But go ahead and keep believing all that propoganda that the BCGEU is cramming down both your and the media's throats.

Silliness,

Alarmism must suit you rather well.

As for the union stuff, collective bargaining won't even start for another 5 or 6 months, and even when that happens it'll still be about a year before we reach any kind of settlement. Don't expect the union to do much for you for another year and a half. What's most amusing about that is that most people who voted for the union will probably have quit by the time that we start paying union dues. And it's not like we're the most profitable call center in the world... I don't expect the union to really be able to do much for us, once they crack open the books and actually see how much profit is actually made here...
